Hi all,

Considering buying an A6 2.7T with 110k on it. Any way to tell if the turbos are on good shape or failing. I can get some idea from driving it but anything more specific??

(I have some experience under the hood of cars, but not with audis or turbocharged cars)

Thanks :)

Biggest sign is if you hear a loud dentist drill noise. There will be some "whizzing" sound when the turbos kicks in, but anything extremely high pitched and loud is a bad sign. Also look for white smoke coming out of the exhaust.

What does it mean if they are making this noise? Mine are letting out a High Pitch loud whine, but only when I first crank it up in the morning.

That's likely not the turbos, but the secondary air pump.  It should run for about 30 seconds on a cold start.

It makes that noise when I first run the car in the morning. I notice that it stops after 30 sec-1min of driving, but starts back up again for about 10 sec. when the car comes to a complete stop.

Like I said, it wont make the noise at any other point following the morning run, no matter how many times I start/stop, and how far/short I run it.

If its the secondary air pump, what do you recommend to fix or silence, it sounds horrible?

It shouldn't start back up after that first 30 seconds. You might wan to check the relay that controls t. A friend of mine had the relay go bad and it would start up randomly.

As far as the noise goes, neither mine nor his is overly noticeable. If yours is, there might be a problem with the pump itself. I've heard that you can take them off and clean them out, but I have no first hand exp. with that.

If you want to check the turbo's you got to pull the downpipes off & check the turbine wheels for shaft play.
