Default Audi ABS

Just wondering what people's options are on Audi's ABS in general. Just bought a 2000 A6 2.7T, and the computer is throwing a P1606. Audi says the ABS ECU is shot and that it needs to be replaced, cost is $1400 CND + 2hrs labour. Its covered under the car's safety warranty from the used dealer. (Can't sell a certified /safety car with the ABS not working.)

The car has 150K km, not really that much, all highway mileage. Find it kinda odd that the ABS ECU is shot. I mean, my Benz has 300K km on it and it has no troubles of this kind. Is the ABS 'weak' in the A6's ? or is it just 'this' car. Thoughts?

Thanks
