Title says it all. I want the blue headlights. I want them now :P. Is this something that's an easy do-it-yourself project or do I need a pro? Anyone done it, and if so how much did it cost? Is the Audi dealership the way to go, or just any mechanic?

Are you sure? I don't take delivery of the vehicle until tomorrow (it's getting detailed) but when I looked at it on Saturday it didn't look like it had HID's in it.
^^Not necessarily...HIDs come with the Premium Package, they aren't standard. All A6's have projectors, but many of them still have halogens Go here: www.vvme.com they have really good prices and they seem to be of pretty good quality. A word of advice though, to get the most light output, you'll want the 4300K, which is the stock color (on Audis it looks very purple to oncoming traffic because of the projectors). A lot of people try to go with 6000K or 8000K and end up going back to 4300K because of poor light output.
Well, I took delivery today, and turns out it definitely has HID's in there. The headlight color (when looking at the road from inside the car) is definitely a different color. And the hi-beams are straight halogens.
Problem is, the light output doesn't really seem much better than halogens except that it's brighter (not really more distance, I don't believe). I'm actually rather disappointed in the range of the bulbs. And if I stand in front of the car and look at it, the lights look white.
I want blue. That's the 6000 range?

So I went to the link and to ask Quintious' question again Is it hard to do it yourself? Would it be a quick one day thing or do you need to take things out and all that?

Quint: Yeah the 6000K are blue...BTW you can adjust the range by programming them with VAG-COM.
Polka: No it's not a hard installation, it's pretty straightforward. The biggest part is deciding where to mount the ballasts. As for bulb size, I believe your have H1's for low-beams and H7's for highs, and yes the kits come with bulbs.
alright one more question (im not car savey really...yet) So would i need 2 kits for lows and highs? I am pretty sure it is just one kit because you specify if you have seperate bulbs for low and high but i don't know for sure...thanks for the help

I would say since HIDs are quite bright you would probably only need to do the lows...most people I know don't even use their brights if they have HIDs.
alright thanks I think I might order my kit this weekend....maybe tonight have to work on college apps though and big cross town rivalry tonight as well

im in the same boat i got a question too. i want to get the flashy "blue" lights but my question is: do different kits have different levels of light color for example:
xenoncompany1: 6000k = light blue xenoncompany2: 6000k = purple color
i am considering getting 10000k for my a6. but i dont want purple lights. i just want the dark blue(not light color, but dark)... similar to the bmw xenon, but just a TAD deeper in color..
The only way that the colors would be different were if one company had really really crappy quality bulbs, otherwise they should be the same. That said, you will hate 10000K lights. The output is not good and everything they shine on will literally be purple. If you want them to look blue like BMWs, stock 4300K will do it while giving you the best light output...in fact to oncoming traffic, our projectors make 4300K even more blue/purple than BMWs.

The higher you go in color (Kelvin) the lower you go with light output (Lumens) You have a 2001 which has a smaller projector than the 2003's and up. This is what is layman terms "curves" the light to change color. Depending on the angle you can see it change form bright white, to blue to purple and back. 4300 is the best light output period. You can adjust the range with VAG-COM. Remeber, they are self levelling anyways, so I don't know how much good that will do. If you want a darker color effect, simply upgrade to the Bi-Xenons found in 2003 and higher. Do the swap and your HID's will look much more blue but still be using the 4300K bulbs. When choosing bulbs online, remember that the best is built by either Phillips or Orsram...anything else is import junk and you will be wasting your $$. A bulb by itself cost upwards of $200 a peice. You want a cool look....stick with your 4300..upgrade to bi-xenon..then slap in Triple Plasma 55watt PIAA in the fog ligts (H3) and they match the headlamps perfectly..Turns out to be really sharp. Lots of light and looks very modern.
