Hi everyone, this past weekend I drove from Houston, TX to Baton Rouge, LA in my A6. The distance between the two cities is around 270 miles. I didn't stop anywhere and the trip took about 3 hours and 15 minutes cruising at 90-100 mph mostly, slowed down once in a while by traffic. But there were stretches where I was cruising at 105-110 mph for about 15-20 minutes continuously.

I guess my question is this - Is this bad for the engine to be driving at such high speeds non-stop for close to 3 hours? Do you guys recommend breaks during such trips? I appreciate any inputs that you may have. Thanks!

I doubt its bad for the car... it would be bad for you if the cops saw you.

sounds like you enjoyed your self but yes that's what the car was designed for and will do it more good than harm ( stop if your tired though ) no point getting killed because your tired it would take the fun out of the journey:)

i love our feature that warns you every two hours

Yeah, that feature is cool as a reminder, but it gets annoying if you don't know how to turn it off . Infact on my first couple of trips, I didn't know how to change the display back to miles to empty (my usual setting) and I had this "2:00 hr" and then "3:00 hr" thing blinking into my face, it was annoying. Once I figured out how to turn it off, I didn't have to worry about that again.:)

Hey i was reading the replies and i was wondering what you guys are talking about that warns you every 2 hours? what is this about?

If you drive your car for 2 hours continuously, the display in between the speedometer and the tachometer alerts you by flashing "2:00 hr" or something like that. It does the same after 3 hours of non-stop driving. It won't go away until you stop and take a break.

Alternately you can change it back to your original display by pressing the rocking switch at the end of the wiper lever and continue driving without being bothered by it. It is a nice reminder only if you know how to turn it off.

I have had to drive between central NJ and Cleveland over the last year. I sometimes drive for for 300 miles without stopping. I will slow down to 65-70 for a few minutes just to let the car cool down. I have not had any problems. A few suggestions. Make sure you have the right oil. I like mobile 1 synthetic for city driving, but for highway I think the mobil 5000 works better. Also I have found a some of the aftermarket oil filters are not sized to OEM specs, ie usually shorter by 1/2.
Before you stop, slow down for a few miles. When you stop ,let the car idle for a minute before you stop it.

I drive my A6 for many hours at about 180-210 KPH - I think Texas is no challenge for your car! My EU-spec 4.2 does have an oil cooler, not sure if that is std on US models?

Someone will probably know.

The high speed of 110 mile won't do anything wrong, but the 80 mile will do, if you were constant on that speed. For long trips, the best way to keep the motor relaxed is to change the speed by atleast 15 milesevery 15 minutes. You can increase or decrease, as it pleases you.
