As some of you know I just purchased my car a couple of months ago.  I love the car, but after getting it, I've already had to replace the alternator twice.  Three weeks ago I got it replaced ($650) and it's in the shop today getting another one put in.  Of course now I'm wondering if somehow the car is destroying these things.  So  I called the dealership and expressed interest in getting a newer car.  I was looking at an '04 2.7T S-Line with 58k miles.  Besides the extra 15hp which probably don't make much of a difference except on the top end, and a few cosmetic changes, are there any other beneficial details I should know about getting this car?  One thing I do know is that gettting an extended warranty is a helluva lot more expensive for this car.  And the coverage isn't as good.  Anyway, I'm hoping you guys can chime in on whether it's worth it if the dealer can meet my demands.

Cappachinoo - I know you have an S-Line.  What advantage do you see with having one?

lol.  i don't mind the "slush-box".  i had a manual years ago.  in city traffic, it can be horrible.  so tip works just fine for me.

2004 S-line is really just cosmetic stuff, but more importantly, there are a number of changes between the 2001 and the 2.7T in 2002 and later.

Off the top of my head (besides exterior/interior color and interior atmosphere choices):
2002-2004 has "Sport" mode (tiptronic) vs. 2001 and earlier with "4-3-2" selection on the auto gear shift;
2002-2004 has exposed exhaust tips vs. 2001 and earlier where the tips are hidden under the rear valence;
2002-2004 has amber turn signals in the back vs. 2001 and earlier with all-red tail lights;
2002-2004 has the SymphonyII head unit with a built-in 6-disc CD changer vs. 2001 and earlier with the SymphonyI single disc(but changer can be mounted in the trunk);
2002-2004 has bixenon lights 2001 and earlier with xenon low beams only (optional);
2002-2004 has thicker (more sound proofing) glass;
2002-2004 has the facelifted front grille and flush headlamp washer covers

The S-line does add 15HP (via ECU programming), 9-spoke RS4/RS6 style wheels, RS6-style spoiler, and a few extra badges.  just be aware taht if the car has the 18" 9-spoke wheels, those came from the factory with summer-only tires, unless they have been replaced by the previous owner.  The no-cost "optional" wheels were similar 17" 9-spoke wheels that came from the factory with all-season tires.  Just an FYI.  I prefer the look fo the 18" wheels, but that is personal preference.

Good luck!

no big difference, I say pick the best 2.7T car you can get whether it is a S or not
Once you chip your car (most do :) ), the 15hp diff will be meaningless. You can get the rear lip sopiler for cheap later....
Focus on picking the right car, low miles, best maintenance and repair hsitory, interior in good shape.... Stuff that matters...
and do a PPI before you buy.

I would get the S-Line. I got a good deal on mines, it had 53K miles on it for $20,000, I looked around and notice that the regular A6 was around the same price. My warranty was $ 1700 and covers everything up to 100,000 miles. So if the turbos goes up, im str8.

This kat the other day told me that " At a glance, he thought it was a RS 6 until he saw the 2.7 on the back". To me, I think the car looks better then the regular A6, I didn't have to add a spoiler, I like the rims, it just looks good stock. formulagigi said something about chipping, GIAC has a chip so you can keep your 15 extra HP, it gives you something like 335hp. When you buy a S-Line, you are basically paying for the extra 15HP and 280 lb-ft of torque because the car is the same as a regular A6 with a sport suspension.

Another reason I say get the S-Line is because Audi only made the A6 S-Line in 2004, for 2008 the S-Line package is a $2,000 option only for the A4's. Here's a wright up on the S-Line http://www.carpages.ca/go/roadtest/2004_audi_a6_27t_sline_quattro.aspx

That IS a good deal! Awesome, I am jealous! :)

The S line does not look like the RS6, it is  missing quite a few things like the awesome wide fenders :), front and rear bumpers... I think the rear lip spoiler is what makes people think of the RS6. Someone asked me the same question but to me there is a big difference b/w our cars and the RS6 and if anything the 4.2 looks more like the RS6.
I did not know GIAC has a special chip for the S that adds the 15hp, good news for Sline owners. APR said they are the same, figured same held true for GIAC. Plus I had heard the 15extra hp are mainly due to ECU mapping that gets overriden by the new software.. Good to know, thanks I'll let my buddy know. he has an 04 S line
As for the sport suspension, I was told all 04's come with it and my buddy's Sline looked the same as mine stock (not lower or higher) and rode the same too. I am not sure it is S line specific. ANYONE knows for sure?
The rear lip soiler is an easy and cheap add on...

Well...doesn't look like the dealer is willing to do anything for me eventhough I just bought the car 2 months ago.  So it's my loss.  He mentioned a 2004 when I first went through them but my mind was set on getting a low cost car for a couple of years.  Looks like I'm going to end up sticking to my original plan.  Looks like I'll be getting my ZX-14 sooner than expected.  The Kawasaki dealer told me I can get one for $8999 now.  Thanks for your input and I will definitely be looking to trade up to the 2004 S-Line in a year or two.  Sucks that Audi doesnt make turbos for the regular line newer cars.  They are sweet lookin.

The suspension design is fully independent, with the front setup being a 4-link design aided by upper and lower control arms, a stabilizer bar and coil springs with gas charged shock absorbers, while the rear is a double control-arm configuration featuring a stabilizer bar and coil springs with gas charged shock absorbers.  Even with computer aided design technology, engineers toil endlessly with suspension geometry and stiffness/compliancy levels seeking the ideal balance between sport and luxury in the A6 2.7T S-Line.

I search the internet and that was the only thing I could find on the S-Line suspension.
