The D2 series body style ran from '97 til '03, I believe. headlights from any D2 will fit your D2

INCORRECT - there were 2 body styles for the D2 - pre-facelift (97-99 in the USA) and Facelift(00-03). the headlights ARE NOT interchangeable...the prefacelift A8s had 2 piece headlights (corner markers and headlights) and the Facelift A8s had one piece headlights. SO if you are a US prefacelift owner, the only real mod to your headlights is to find a set of clear corner markers...

Ummm... Unless I'm mistaken, the 1-piece units are a direct-swap for the 2-piece units. At least, that's what the folks at Shokan, Dad's Auto, and a couple of others tell me. The REAL question is whether or not the 1-piece units you're gonna replace the 2-piecers with come WITH teh wiring harness, assuming youi're upgeading to the bi-xenons over the 3-halogens.

The front-end facelift involved changes to the bumper-cover, some minor trim pieces, and pop-up headlight washers. To the best of My knowledge even teh attachment points remain teh same from pre- to post- facelift

All D2's have the same dimensions, its the D3 that has to have those modifications from 04 to the 06 style.

sadly, you are both still incorrect. According to the parts manager at Autohaus, Lancaster - the headlights ARE NOT INTERCHANGEABLE - you would need new front fenders, a new hood, not to mention the prefacelift headlights have the fogs integrated into the headlights, where as the facelift headlights do not have any fogs...they are located below on the front valence. The facelift headlights are also Xenon lights, where you need ballasts to power them, prefacelift headlights are basic halogens (although there may have been an OEM option for xenons on the 97-99s...rare tho). D3 are not even relevent in this conversation. I own a 98 A8 4.2, trust me, ive done the research. if you still dont believe me see the photos:
facelift front end
S8 facelift

prefacelift front end (mine)

you can also try asking the boys over at D2 Audi A8/S8 forum but you will probably get the same answer that i got..."STFA"

Thats an S8, it has completely different dimensions and wiring than the A8, you can't swap out an A8 headlamp for an S8 headlamp that is true.
I myself have swapped out 2 sets of 97 lights to 02 or 03 hadlamps with no modifications to the hood, fenders, or wiring. I did however have problems with the mounting brackets because they are a little different but all in all it works fine.
