I have an 04 A6 2.7T with 86,000 miles. I am having perfomance and starting issuses with it. If I drive for maybe an hour or so then stop at a gas station and shut it off when I come out of the station it sometimes won't start for like 10 minutes and then it surges for about 5-10 minutes. The service tech at the dealership told me it was the fuel pump but i don't want to spend 700 bucks to find out that he was wrong so if any of you guys out there can help me i would really appreciate it. Any trouble codes?

You mean after filling tank, or just leaving sit without fueling? If its after fillup it could be a vent valve as I just had. mine would do that after filling gas everytime, but only after fueling. If it does it if not fueling, I would say it could be the pump.
