Don't bother, change the CTS sensor. The CTS can cause everything from a hard start to miss-firing the engine without throwing a CEL. Its cheap and easy to do.

You can drive it fine, the engine really isn't miss-firing, the faulty signals from the CTS is fooling the engine management into thinking there is a miss so it kinda stumbles a little bit.

Behind the engine on the passenger's side, remove the intake hose and look straight down behind the motor and you should see it facing straight upwards towards you.
To change it pull the plastic clip out and pull up on the sensor, you will lose some coolant.
Just make sure not to take off the coolant resivior cap or you will loose most of your coolant.

I have these sames symptoms...could this be the same for an 03 3.0?  I did a search for the CTS sensor of an 2003 and no parts found.

No the 3.0L engines don't really have problems with the CTS sensor, i would clean the throttle body valve with some carb cleaner, and perform a throttle body adaption. How you do a throttle body adaption is to leave the key in the ON position for about 10 minutes and the throttle body should adapt itself.

You need to do the same thing as i said above, but 4.2L engines are prone to carbon build up on the intake valves, so have someone floor the engine and you spray carb cleaner into the intake right at the throttle body until the can is empty. That should get rid of most of the carbon.

great thank you.  After doing a quick AF/AW/google search i was unable to come up with a location of the throttle valve body.

I am pretty handy with classic cars, but modern cars intimidate me.  I don't want to go pulling apart things that don't need to be.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Um it can be a PITA to get to the throttle body on the 3.0L engine, its behind the motor. Follow the hose out of the air box to the back of the engine, you will see a large plastic "air horn" as we call it bolted to the throttle body. If you don't wanna take that off, take off the hose going into the air horn and do the spray carb cleaner into the engine trick. Spray it directly into the air horn so it pulls it into the engine while someone else floors the motor up and down. Once the can is empty, perform the throttle body adaption like i told you.
