Default keeps going into limp mode

So I have no idea what is going on with my 97 A8 Quattro. When I first start the car it isn't in limp mode, but when I put it in drive it doesn't feel like it goes into gear and when I push on the accelerator, as soon as it hits 1200rpm there is a small thud and it goes into limp mode. No matter how quickly or slowly I do this, as soon as it hits 1200rpm it does it. Everytime I turn the car off and back on it will no longer be in limp mode. It doesn't do it in reverse though. I can get the rpm's over 1200 in reverse and it's fine. I just got done replacing the Transmission Range Switch (F125) but I didn't clear the codes yet because I just haven't been able to get it done yet.Would clearing the codes matter? I'm thinking the next thing I'll do is replace the ATF fluid and filter and see what happens. I have no idea what to do after that though. Any help is appreciated.

Definately erase the fault codes. Changing the fluid and filter is a very good idea, and try not to drive it too much until that is done.

Yea, I'm not driving it at all right now because I don't like the stress the engine is under when starting from a stop in 4th gear. Does anybody know of a good place to get the gaskets and filter for the ATF change other than the dealership?

Is five liters of tranny fluid enough for an A8? I just got this kit: http://www.blauparts.com/proddetail....od=F2A1005%2DAand they only supply five liters but say it should be adequate

don't waste your money get the codes ( you say its in limp mode before its in gear ) that's an engine fault? what mods have been done? ATF fluid change and filter is a good thing on high mileage

Hi! I had the same problem with my -97 A8 and since Audi themselves don´t repair the gearboxes, I took it to a garage specializing in Audi, VW, BMW, Mercedes in Tallinn. With my car they had to change some hydraulic valve for 2nd and 3rd gear. The guy said that it´s a usual problem with Tiptronic when they get older. My car mileage is 220000 km.
