So many of you know that I am going to school in California to learn how to make movies. Lately I have been talking to people who are actually working in the industry here and it is much different than I thought. I knew it was going to be a lot of hard work but after talking to people it is much more than that. They pretty much eat, sleep, and work. There is no free time and if you can't find work or productions to be on then you are in trouble. I absolutely love making movies and doing what I do. It has always been a dream of mine, but I also want to have a life and a family later down the road and I don't think I can do that working here in LA. So, here is the dilemma part that I am in... I am trying to figure out if I want to stay here at the school and then move back to washington or somewhere else that won't be so hectic or do i want to quite now and start my own business. I am really leaning towards the side of moving back now because by the time I am done with school (Aug. 2010) I will owe almost $150,000 in school loans. If I leave now, it will only be about $12,000.
Growing up sucks. lol

if it's a good school, then maybe you should stay there.
aren't there other types of jobs that would require your skill like TV productions or even training videos for different companies?
that's pretty pricy for an education. are there other schools that could provide what you need?
don't know what to tell you. if it's your passion, i'd stick with it.

my roommate @ fsu was an exec producer for warner bros. my understanding is if you're not from the #1 school in the country (we were 3 or 5 @the time) you'll really struggle. its massively competative. lots of luck involved. also, he said its who you know. most of family was in the industry, from makeup to actors to him. your call.
everyone i know that studied film went into other professions, graduating w/another degree. got one friend travels the world doin bullet forensics. its cool. he still does indie stuff for his own gratification, and the job gives him the finances to do it.

Josh - there are few in this world that do what there hearts compel them to do - if your passion isin filmmaking then follow it and make films.Create films that inspire and change the way we feel. Make movies than make us swell with emotions and want to share such experiences with our fellow man.
If it is not, then go home and pursue something else. But do so if it it what you want. Success is what we make of it not what others judge us upon.
The desire to accomplish anything comes from within not from without... only you can decide this, my friend.
Thanks for the input guys. If I end up leaving I will not be getting out of the film industry. I will be moving back to Spokane, where living is a heck of a lot cheaper than down here, and starting my own production company. I will film weddings, events, and other random stuff until it starts making money and then i will start using that money along with sponsorships to create short films to submit into film festivals. Once that takes off I will be able to start making more films and such.
