I have a 1992 100CS automatic transmission. Last week when driving it began to idle very rough and lose power (almost like it is missing). Going up hills I need to downshift and floor the pedal. If I am driving at around 3,000RPM in 3rd gear it seems to be ok, as soon as I shift it into Drive and the Rpm drop below 3,000 the engine seems to surge and lose all power. My first thought was that I had bad gas, I used a can of HEET and it seemed to help alittle (might have benn in my head). I have disconnected the fuel filter but I get good flow on both sides so I do not think it is the pump or filter. I refilled today with Premium gas and it did not seem to improve. I seem to be losing some fuel economy. Any ideas? Hopefully you can keep it simple, I have not been able to find a manual for this car and it intimidates me a little.

Could be a couple of things. Check the plugs first. You may have one that isn't firing right which could cause a loss of power. What does it do when you first start it up? Does it idle high, like above 1000 RPM's and does it drop eventually when the car is warmed up? Does the idle pitch? Does the car sputter when you press the gas pedal? I would suggest you change the fuel filter first. If that doesn't help out, you might be looking at a new fuel pump. If it's a bad fuel filter, you're getting crap into your accumulator which is getting pumped into your engine. If I'm not mistaken, it goes fuel filter to accumulator and then pump. The accumulator is their to maintain a constant amount of fuel pressure for the pump. If the pump is bad, that may cause you to lose power cause you're not getting enough fuel to the engine.
