Hello to all Audi enthusists,

I recently have begun to have problems with my fuel gauge reading on my 98 A-6 quattro regarding the amount of gas my fuel tank. I have run out of gas twice now as both the computer warning and gauge have been incorrect. How does on fix this problem? I thought Audit had a recall on this can't verfiy this. Any thoughts or solutions are appreciated.

Yeah, it's usually the fuel sensor switch. It needs to be replaced. It is an Audi repairable item only. They need to access the unit from the panel inside the trunk on the B5 platform - I believe it's the same for the B6. It's found in the fuel line near the fuel filler. It's a quick repair - mine took 30 minutes. The majority of the time was to "air out" the cabin, because fumes will get into the cabin during the R&R. So my service tech spent a few minutes driving the car around with the windows down.

do a little research on this. this can be a very expensive repair if you go to a dealer. If you are a DIY guy, there are step by steps including pictures either on this or the AW forum. Before you invest a lot in this, try running a high end fuel system cleaner through the tank with a full tank of gas. There are a number of them recommended. The one I used is carried by BMW dealers and it worked like a charm. Mine might stick occasionally now, but will right itself during the use of the car. I think it cost me about $13 vs hundreds. Also, just reset your trip odometer whenever you fill up and expect to run out of gas between 310 and 350 miles. (at least if you drvie a V8 like I do.) My tank holds almost 22 gallons and I get about 15-16 mpg. You can check that avg as well if you really want to live on the edge with your gas useage..
