I recently purchased the above vehicle YOM 1997 in the estate(station wagon ) version Im having trouble with the gear selection in the low range
symptoms
occasionally and especially soon after starting up when I travel then stop and go to pull away again there is a delay in 1st gear selecting the again occasionally another delay until 2nd gear selects causing 2nd gear to engage at high  revs if im not careful Once into the higher range it drives perfectly.
I took it to an Auto transmission specialist who diagnosed the fault (and only fault evident )as a faulty BRAKE SWITCH.......................I replaced the brake switch adjacent to the brake pedal ,the fault was deleted from the computer and the car drove perfectly for about 20 miles, then the same fault reoccurred. I was told that erasing the fault from the memory had given the impression that the fault was rectified .........apparently the aforementioned brake switch was not the problem

Can anyone please enlighten me and give me any guidance on this fault and how it may be rectified

Its a nice car but Ive been Quoted £3000($6000us)to have the gearbox overhauled or £5000($10000) for a new gearbox.....I only paid £2000 for the car and unless I can find a much cheaper solution than this its 'going in the skip'..........everything else on the car is in good condition for a high milage car.......although ive been told that this is a troublesome gearbox being one of the earliest models, the fact that it drove perfectly for a while after the computer was reset, makes me think the fault is either engine management or external to the gearbox itself..............it still has the original gearbox

look for a button with a snowflake ( seriously ) on it that winter mode and used to get you out of deep snow/ice by reducing the rpm/torque of the engine, the auto tranny has a separate ECU and nothing to do with the engine so clearing the engine fault code was false ( you have been done ) to clear the tranny code simply pull the fuse pull the tranny

edit: its an AVANT ( station wagon/estate is reserved for VW and other lower rated cars lol )

The only button with snowflake on it that i can see is on the bottom L/H of the heating control panel. Top L/H button is for front window demist then central sqare button with AUTO on then in L/H bottom corner is button with snowflake. when I push this button a little snowflake lights up on the L/H heater control display push again it goes out. with it out push demister control and it comes on again push snowflake to cancel............is this the button you mean. Please excuse my ignorance, I didnt get a users manual with this vehicle when I bought it and Haynes dont do a manual for the Quattro

Ive just tried it again without the snowflake symbol showing but there is still a delay after stopping before the 1st gear re-engages when going to pull away again on about 1 in 3 stops (sometimes spaced sometimes following each other)

In fairness to the guy who checked it out for me, he plugged his computer into the socket between the front seats and said it was  a brake light switch fault........he was a transmission specialist not an Audi specialist as such and when he cleared it, it did  give the appearance of correcting the fault for a short time
