What's the best engine for the A6? The biturbo v6 or the 4.2L V-8?

Kind of a broad question.

For tuning? Ketting the most HP out of it with the least cost. the 2.7T

For reliability? the 4.2.

I have driven both. Stock for stock you cannot notice a performance advantage of either. The 4.2 seemed to have mroe low end grunt while the 2.7 pulled harder up top.

I own a 2.7 and love it. I purchased it used so I got what was available. If I could pick between the 2 I would pick the 4.2 just for the dependability of it. Turbo cars tend to throw fits.

Thanks...that was my thinking as well. I love the A6, but don't know about the bi-turbo maintenance, the V-8 seems like the best choice for me. I am hoping to buy one this spring.

Thanks again..

You'are wrong. A heavily modded A4 would have to come close to S4 specs to be able to beat the A6 2.7T. Add the APR chip to the A6 and the A4 will never get there regardless how many mods you do...

if u mod the a6 like ud mod the a4, theres no way the a4 would even see the HP the a6 would. remember the a6 has the exact same engine as the s4. u can get a nice 450+ hp outta that engine. a really nice a4 would just see 400 or so hp... weight isnt too far off on the 2 cars either...

modded 2.7T's have their fair share of problems. One of buddy's has an S4 and has gone through two sets of turbo's. He runs a chip, dp and exhaust, and drives autox and track. He refuses to upgrade to K04. K03 are very small turbo's and running quite a bit towards their peak efficiency so they're not going to be as reliable as a larger turbo. Audi used them to get instantaneous boost (relatively speaking) but they will treat you right if you handle them with care.

4.2 also has awesome fender flares and a smooth engine.

2.7T engine is right off the S4. A6 2.7T weighs about 100lbs more than an B5 S4 and about the same as a B6 S4. People are amazed to see A6 2.7T's on the track tearing it up. There are quite a few K04'd A6's out there with good suspension setups, tearing up the tracks.

I think you deserve a hand for a solid explanation. I just bought a A6 4.2L, because I have destroyed my last turbo (2000 Volvo V70 XC SE AWD Turbo for this season).Ole Tmr would have been a beast in the day

I love the 4.2 for the look and feel. Read up on the two. this question gets asked all of th time and there are uhundreds of thoughts on it. One will say one is fastr, then the other will say the other. Stock for Stock they are very close in power and acceleration. You realy cannot modify the V8 engine by chipping and expect any major gains. You can with the turbo. Either way your in a good league of autos.

Question...the S6 is it 4.2? or is there another factor to that line?  I've been trying to figure that out for some time now.  I saw one yesterday in passing and got curious.

Its funny...here in Atlanta when I pass another audi owner we just kind of look at each other's car...no nod, wave or anything...kind of sucks really.  Mine is lowered with RS6 Hyper replicas and a recent tail so I know some folks are like "what the hell??".  As you can see I am quite proud of it...heh!

I saw a lot of 4.2s at the auction when going to buy my 2.7t.  I wanted manual though and I don't think there are any manual 4.2's state side...I read that they have them in europe but not here.

You are right...no mauals, sucks. I'm in atlanta also and have the same problem with the no nod mentality. Although I raced a s4 the other day on 75 and had a blast. Maybe I'll see you around man.

Hmmm...your car looks familiar...you ever get on 85 south around 4pm to 5pm?  I was driving one day (black 02 2.7t no mods at the time) and a car that looked  a lot like yours pulled up...slowed down...dude looked at me and took off.  Later I saw him again on the chesire bridge exit, I put my hands up to say (best I could) that he caught me on a bad day otherwise I would have raced....I was a bit intoxicated...enough to know not to go any faster than I was.  Anyway, yeah man hope to see you too, I travel down 85 south every afternoon coming from Norcross everyday....

i'm on my second 4.2.  first one was a 2001 a6 quattro (got totaled, not my fault).  upgraded to a loaded 2003 a6 quattro.  i test drove a few 2.7's (2003's or so) but was not impressed.  i know there are mods to increase the hp.  but the 4.2 just seemed to drive smoother, nicer.

I'm in ATL and always acknowledge. Particularly the 4.2s. I'm on 285 top end every day. Sometimes west side. I might gun a little for fun but racing around here will get you slamer time. Got popped the other day (early on a Sunday Am late for a tee time) doing 102 in a 55. I honestly thought I was doing about 88. Really polite to the cop and he was really cool to me and dropped me to 80. No priors in 10 years. No more speeding for me as the fine at 80 was $395. He was supposed to take me in for 100. Anyway, I love the 4.2 particluarly in atlanta so maybe I'll spot you.

I used to skate. I've had that name for like 10 years. I don't usually hit 85. I'm on 75 most of the time running north through the city at about a buck ten. Kidding, but you gotta stomp it every once in awhile to still feel young. See ya around mang.
