View Full Version : Why only C5 here?

Hey guys, I have noticed one thing on the A6 forum, that most of us owns or want to own C5. I don't remember seeing a post for C6 platform. Is it because we (C5 owners) are more passionate than C6 owners? or is it something else?? My theory is that 2.7T owners are the ones keeping the threads of this forum alive.

Ever thought of that?

Thanks!

The only thing I can think of is that the 2005 and newer are like $32,000+ and no-turbos. Plus the newer A6's got there grown-man-on.

Gentlemen- I noticed the same thing. For a time I was a prospective purchaser of an '07 A6 (since bought it) and made a few posts, which didn't getmuch response. I do remember one fellow saying this wasa forum for "poor" (his words not mine) owners of used Audi's. Now you're indicating that since the newer C6 models go for $32K plus, we can't post here. WTH. We can enjoy these fine vehciles as much as the next guy, so come on all you C6-ers, let's start posting!;)

Bobbya, thats the thing which many don't understand. Some people think that being in these forums are to save extra buck and get cheap fixes, thus belongs to the poor. I won't ever let anyone, apart from the dealer touch my car, but the reason I am here, and I guess most of us here are, because we are passionate about cars. Everyday, I learn more about the car I drive, just being on the forum. It is about understanding your car, and especially German cars,as theyare not American. They are more than a mechanical piece of steel, they are piece of art. It's like falling in love...you want to understand it from inside-out.

So, all C6 owners, please post. We might learn few things about your platform, and one day most us will upgrade to C6. Come-on, whatever, it's still an Audi.

I'm just saying that the C6 cost a lot for a used car....I would love to have a C6, but my pockets are not trying to hear it.The C6 are usually still under factor warrantys and if you have a problem, most can take it to the dealer. To be honest with you, if I had a C6 (S-Line of course), I wouldn't want to tune it, there just to nice of a car to tune.

I went to a c6 4.2 loaded to the max and have had much better luck with it than I did with my C5 2.7t. I didn't think I'd buy another Audi after that one. The C6 is treating me more like a reliable Honda. There just isn't much to say about the C6. Biggest things seem to be MMI updates, pretty boring really. The best site for C6 info is, www.audiworld.com .I can't say enough good things about my 2005. It has a much stiffer chassis, 4.2 liter 335HP V8 that returns better mileage than my old 2.7t, (1.5-2 MPG), and does so with more comfort and smoothness then the V6's. The best thing is the reliability thus far. Night and day difference from the C5.

Wish they'd post more too, enlighten us on the C6 platform such as the post above.
I personally could afford a C6 and chose not to because I don't like its shape, too common too japanese looking, too boringIMO and NO TURBOS! PLus it is even porkier than ou C5;s!! Audi has to start building lighter cars! Epecially with so much weight in the front. I love the C6 interior though! But the C6 4.2 is no match for my C5 2.7 modded. But more reliability was much needed, glad to hear Audi improved in that area!

I am trying to get my dad to purchase a C6 or new TT or something since both his kids will be in college next year (me 1st year and bro 3rd year). Possibly a S4 if I get lucky in convincing him. I would like to know more about the C6 as to intice him into buying it. He is getting an Audi though....one thing is he likes wagons soI will have to see about that (not saying I don't like the wagons I just haven't seen a lot in town for sale)

Well thats an easy question to answer, this is primarilly a DIY forum for problems that might arise and C6 cars are all under warranty so far. Plus it seems the people that get the C6 lease them, and always get new cars after the lease is up.

Good responses from everyone. Auditech79- You've got a valid point and I think (hope) what your saying is that addition to warrantee coverage, the C6's are so reliable we don't need any DIY help;). However, there are a number of operational issues that we need to keep on top of, for example, there was one post about all the "hidden" features on our cars that people didn't know existed, and how to use them. Very informative. Other posts on best set-up for tires, suspension, engine mods, etc, would be/are also very helpful. And, it won't be soon before our C6's are out of warrantee and start running up big miles where we'll probably posting more for help ourselves.
I'm enjoying the forum and look forward toall participation (old cars/new cars) and even moreso, I'm enjoying my A6!:):D;)

It doesn't help that there are only a few years of the C6 out so far as opposed to the number of years the C5 has. :-) Really, the C5 is more tuner friendly atm. The C6 is getting near in price to its other german competitors and Audi just hasn't brought as much to the table. I love my A6, but the fact is while its got a great deal of refinement and luxury its not quite as sporty as the past C5 was in comparison to its competitors. Also, the fact that the 4.2 can knock on the door of 70k for purchase makes it a little more exclusive. Give it a few years, and when the C7 is out people will be asking, why are there so many more C6 owners on here then C7?

I have an 05 4.2. It is a great car, but I am not a DIY so my input is rather limited. I spend more time on Audiworld.com where there are more C6s.

To be honest, I never even considered an A6 until I finally discovered that the C5 A6 2.7T six speed sport exisited. I really liked the B5 S4 until I realized I could find an A6 version that was not beat to hell. It is a classy version of the S4, that is more performance luxury sedan than sport compact. I really like the C5, and also like the classy looks of the C6 too. Audi's designs are classy all the way.

i personnaly think that people that purchase expensive cars such as these, dont want to bother getting dirty.... Me personally I hate when my cars break down, but love the feeling I get when I fix it!!!!! Yeah, i can afford to buy a new car, or take it to the dealer when something happens, but I dont.... I rather do what every MAN in my family does.... fix it. I work in a business environment, and you should see peoples eyes grow when i tell told them I had to basically remove the top half ofthe engine to get to the starter on my Caddilac Deville northstar. Im sure most of you have had the same. those that cant fix there own car IMO are prissy guys who never had anyone show them the basic man things. I have had many cars, and have fixed them all, from caddyies, olds, buick, nissan toyota, and now audi. the one comment that goes on alot here is "if you cant afford it you shouldnt buy it" I hate that mentality that the Audi forums have... NEVER happened at cadillac.... We were all there to HELP!!!!!! whether its c5,c6

I actually like to chime in and help others diagnose their problems,,,, and if you cant do the same, you shouldnt join these forums, take it to the stealer!!! and let us help each other with out those negative comments

Maybe thats why you dont here from the newer car drivers.... They may think they are to good for us, and rather give their money to someone else, and not help others

Guys that dont fix there own cars are prissy? I use to fix my Infiniti and have a warranty on my Audi. I'm tired of fixing cars, you're only saving labor cost. I'm happy with getting information from here, buying my parts, and takingit somewhere to have them installed. I do the lil bit that I can do, but basically I don't have the time to spend a whole weekend fixing my car anymore, I have a life,I'm far from prissy!!!

How much work have you done to an audi? Taking out the intake manifold on a northstar engine to do the starter is a cake walk compared to some of the starters/alternators we have. For instance to pull the alternator on a B6 S4 4.2L you have to drop the engine out a few feet or remove the entire subframe and front clip to get it out. Thats around 20 hours of labor, not something someone can DIY with craftsman tools. But i agree, people shouldn't say that you can't afford it because you don't know that individual, but they should be notified about how much parts cost compared to lets say a caddy, which is around 4X the price on most parts.

C5? – C6? – DIY? - Prissy car guys?

There is room for all here!
Don’t trash someone because he has money and doesn’t want to dirty his hands. On the other hand, don’t trash someone that wants to do the work himself – either because he wants to save a few bucks or likes to work on cars.
All types are Audi owners! They just have different interests and needs.

I currently have 2 C4s and a B5. In the past I had a C3 (200QT) and even a B3 (90Q). However, you don’t hear me complaining that the C5 guys are talking about their vehicles. It is interesting to hear about their problems, and some of it is transferable to my current rides.

Additionally, I disagree with some of what AudiTec79 says - I suspect he would be surprised at what some people can do with Craftsman tools and a little ingenuity. It dosen’t always take super snap-on or special tools. Moreover, Audi Parts are not that expensive if you know where to get them ie. Sealership cost for a cat is around $800 when a genuine Audi cat can be purchased for around $450. Yes, you can get universal cats for a few hundred dollars that fit your Honda or Toyota but they are not Audi’s.

But I not here to argue. I’m here to have fun, learn, and share info.
What about you guys???

I didn't mean you have to have snap on tools, i mean you have to have special made audi factory tools like a $20,000 table jack to lower the entire engine and tranny together, or factory engine support tool, or countless other tools that audi special makes so we can't work on them as easilly.
Craftsman and Snap on are roughly the same, the quality is just different.

God that is such a childish mentality. To assume that there aren't as many C6/other newr model owners her because they think themselves better? Jealous much? Your forgetting the fact that there are a great deal more C5s out there then C6s, not to mention the massive conglomoration of C6 owners at audiworld. I fix my own cars as well, although not my C6 because I have a warantee and I dont pay a dime for anything that gets done. Not to mention that while Ive got a killer rack of tools at my disposal, there are quite a few special audi made tools that I dont have/dont wanna spend the ridiculous amount of money on. Its not worth it to buy specialized tools especially because I only expect to have the car another year or two. your also forgetting that taking your car into service means you get a rental (depending on dealership) and arent down any time at all. The fact is I work a ton, I dont wanna spend saturday fixing the car I commute with when I could be spending time with my wife and child. If this was my project car maybe.... maybe I wouldn't mind spending the time on it but then its my hobby vehicle as opposed to making sure I can get to work on monday.

I respect the guys those who fix the car themselves, but I am not the one who do that. That doesn't make me Prissy, or the rich spoilt brat. Which I am not. I bought the Audi, to experience the rich, premium experience... which only Germans can deliver. I leave my Audi to my dealers for most of the work, as I can afford the time to fix it. Also, these are way complicated cars than American cars, so why even try something and mess with it. I am sure my dealer mechanics knows better than me. In fact, I was impressed to see that the service manager at my dealer is certified tech from Audi, where he got his classes and sit for an exam in Germany.

If I want to spend my spare time under the car, I will go for old 1990 Land Rover Discovery.LRs are the car for perfect DIY. No way, I am messingwith this car. It rides like a dream, and Idon't mind it.

I think you forgot to read all the words in my post. I said "I disagree with some of what AudiTec79 says - I suspect he would be surprised at what some people can do with Craftsman tools and a little ingenuity." A $20,000 table jack might make the job easier but with a bit of ingenuity - the key word being "INGENUITY" -one can do almost anything without special tools. I'll agree that a few special things like code readers and good repair manuals areneeded because of the electronics in today's vehicles. But don't scare people away from the "Joy of Working on their Audi " with the special tool scam.

I have aligned many clutches and pressure plates with a wooden dowel, or pulled a motor with a simple come-along, or modified a tool for a particular application whenthe factory people said I had to have a special tool.

auditech79
11-10-2007, 04:59 PM
Well sure you can align a clutch, or align a prop seal and other simple stuff like that for sure, and i'll give instructions on how to do that here without special tools.
I've helped more people fix their cars through DIY than you can imagine, im not trying to scare people away from the fun of it, im just saying there is some things that you just can't do with out special tools, for instance taking out something as simple as the radio which you need the keys for. Those are cheap though.

I never bought those radio keys I just used an old coathanger for the 90 and 200 radio and a flat piece of aluminum for the A6s...

I haven't gotten a chance to read all threw the post but. I own a 2000 A6 with tons of mods and a 2003 S8 that is stock....I bought the 2000 to mod and work with..As for the S8 I will do small work but if it gets to involved I take it to my qualified friends...Mind you I am older than most on here. But in the end if you don't enjoy working on your car but you like learning about your car this and other places are a great place to go...on average the people we learn most from is the crowd that work on there cars..and adversily we see people that don't work on there cars give the most greef (obviously not all) in the end this is a place to share info not to force one to think they are less for either working or choosing to not work on there car....in the end I enjoy working on my car so I do it because I like to. There are others that can't afford to pay so they do. in the end It is nice to be able to let some one else do all the work so you have less of the worry.....all in all work don't work an enthusiast is both

There are a few things that I would not tackle just because it isn't worth the bother. But I seldomlet special tools get in the way of a few weeks of fun, bloody knuckles, and grease under my fingernails. (the knuckles and grease are badges of honor- and knowing that I did it gives me great satisfaction)

Scurrying around for parts, and trying to figure out why the Germans put so many screws in a cover or even where they are is part of the challange. Just getting all the instrument pannel lights working can be a lot of fun and sucessfully tackling a brake job is a thrill. (part of the brake job thrill is doing 4 rotors and 4 calipers for about what a dealer would charge for replacing the pads and rotors on one axel)
