My 2001 A6 2.7T had a check engine light come on a while back, then it went off after a few days, then on again, off, etc.  Dealership said it was the torque converter and they got Audi to cover 1/2 of the cost since I was only a few days out of Certified Pre-Owned warranty.  The car only has 70K on it.

After the repair, I notice the car kind of shutters when accelerating and I notice that the shifting, particularly when cold, seems erratic.  Now they are telling me that one or more differentials (is there more than one?) has significant play in them and the only way to repair that is to replace the entire transmission.

I can't help but think they screwed something up when they replaced the torque converter.  I've also learned that the mechanics at my dealership effectively don't get paid unless they find something to fix.  What's the dang deal here?

I am not sure, but there is no way a dealer will manipulate the mechanics to do something like it. I once had an issue with the car, where the dealer was not too happy about changing a part that will cost hom 800 bucks, so I called the Audi Helpline (you can get the 1800 no. from audiusa.com) and opened a trouble ticket with them. You won't believe in less than 30 minutes I got the call from service manager who was more than happy to accomodate my request, in fact even gave me next day appointment. The parts were changed and I didn't paid a single buck. I am still on company warranty, so yours might be a different case, but if you will call Audi directly, and reuest them and explain what happened , I won't be surprised if they help you or suggest any other dealer. After all, what are you loosing? Not even a anything for a call...hey..its 1-800 no. :) So, try. Good luck.

yes, your gettin screwed I believe. As the poster above me pointed out, go to Audiusa and call that 1-800 number. As an Audi employee you wouldnt believe how scary it is when Audi Usa calls you because of a customer complaint/bad CSI (customer service index-those little surveys you get after purchasing new/getting service) are.
