Just purchased a 1999 Avant A6 and notice that the cluster mounted LCD heads up display fades around the edges after the car has been running a few minutes.

Any ideas? I did search the archive but either am not phrasing my question correctly or am using incorrect terms.

Thanks in advance!

it's a fairly common problem. Unfortunatly, it's not a cheap fix. You can't just replace the LCD screen, you have to replace the whole instrument cluster. That can be pretty costly.

Great, thanks for the fast response. It's not really an issue, just wanted to know if it was a big deal. Thanks!

not really, but eventually it may fade completely out.

Hello,
I have a 1998 A6 which has the same fault. It has been like this for a while. I have orderd an electrical manual from the states so hope to tackle this when it comes. Being an electronics technican you always think you can do it yourself. I will keep you posted.
Gav.

I agree... I have been thinking the same think myself. the fact that mine looses and gains lines makes me think its a poor connection, vs. a fried chip. That being said I wonder if its a loose connetor or bad trace... Let us know what you find Gavin. Pictures would be aweseome.

Yeah, the A6 LCD has issues. I've seen displays with completely inverted text as well. As for the fading...its pretty common and like jestnomen said, requires replacement of the entire unit, which, IIRC was something like 700USD?
