RS vs M vs AMG, well let's put benz out right off the bat because AMG while good, is an outside firm, but regardless, still 3rd best overall. So when it comes down to RS and M, I would have to say they are very, very close, basically equal; the only thing is the M division much more established than Audi's RS line

Actually from what I read a couple years ago, AMG was absorbed by M-B and is now a full-fledged part of M-B, just as M is for BMW.

Oh really? I could see that, im sure they have always worked very closely anyway, the thing about Benz and AMG models it that there is no doubt they are very good and very fast, but the base from which they start with is more pure luxury based than that of Audi and BMW, so I feel as if Audi/BMW turn out more of a raw sports car. For example the SLR, although an unbelievable car, most said too much Mercedes and too little McLaren

All wheel drive - Advantage: Audi - Quattro - Audi has been doing AWD for alot longer than BMW, at least in US. (A few friends have had issues with xdrive)

Driver Experience - Advantage: BMW. Although Audis engage the driver in an involving experience, BMW offers better connectivity between road and human

Looks - Advantage: Audi. In my optinion, Audi has nailed interior, and particularly exterior looks in this category, just easier on the eyes.

Design- Advantage: BMW. Weight distribution, overall weight, certain ergonomics (handbrake not slamming into center console), etc.

Performance - Advantage: BMW. The 3.0 Twin Turbo 6 that is found in the 335xi - Audi's A4 3.2 cannot compete. 0-60 time (5.5 seconds v 6.7 seconds, 300 HP v. 255 HP) Audi has to close this gap. Although the platform for the new S4 looks appealing (supposedly 330 HP, maybe more, v6 BIturbo)

Cost- Advantage: Audi. Audi's are not cheap, however the option prices for BMW's are sky high compared to the value you will get.
These are just some of my opinions. But don't submit this question to Car & Driver, they are so biased towards BMW's!!!

When it comes to BMW the only thing i would drive off of a dealership is Dinan model. now THOSE are unique. And they sound so damn amazing. Sorry but i work in Television News and every muther Facking anchor and reporter i work with seem to think that BMW is a unique vehicle to own, i could never own a car that ignorant people automatically think to buy when they make some money.

Sometimes there does seem to be a cultural barrier between audi and BMW. Especially in the branding part. Some people wonder what Audi stands for, or what BMW stands for. I think its a question of which German machine you perfer driving. I wonder which consumers each company is targeting?

I love them both. I have had the opportunity to drive all three and I can say that they all appeal to a different part of me.

Kind of like puttins Jessica Alba vs.  Jessica Biel vs Jenna Jameson. they all do it for me in one way or the other.

I use to own a 2005 BMW X5 and i must say it was a sweet ride.  But the up keep on it was high as f#ck.  My cost of car ownership was almost cut in half since I got the Audi.  Glad I made the switch.  If I had the money for a 50k-60k price tag car along with the cash for the cost of ownership, I would choose an AUdi S5 over the BMW 335xi or whatever bimmer comparable.  The look and feel of the S5 is just all sooo sweet.

I like Audi because they have designs that can't be beat in my opinion. Much of the new BMW looks overdone to my likings, but Audi still has the sleek clean styling that always interested and cought my eye. Plus you can't argue with AWD.

I would definately take a Jessica Alba off the lot, no comparison needed thank you ;)

Ahem... Anyway... As for cars, I really do like my Audi. BMW is just a tad too rich for me, and if I wanted a solid connection to the road, I would be sitting in a Lotus Elise. Audi gives me that smile on my face, you know the one, the "hold on, you are in for a ride" smile. Mercs really have never done anything for me, but back when I was a wee lad, those diesel engines sounded like a big truck engine, so I wanted one. Then I turned 6.

Audi really nailed the performance/luxury balance point for me, I guess thats why I'm an Audi customer and not BMW or Merc. Then again, the Audi stealership is right down the road from me, the nearest BMW that I know of is a couple hours away. Not a journey I want to have to make for service. Actually I think there is a really sketchy stealership downtown that does Mercs and BMWs, along with Porsches and the such. I'd rather drive the 2 hours with an empty radiator than go there though. Sketchy I say.

I personally love Audi and BMW. They both have pros, and they have cons. When you think about it, Audi is like the middleground between Mercedes and BMW. Mercedes is about class and luxury first and foremost. BMW primarily sets out to offer a great driving experience. Audi fits comfortably between the two. They aren't quite as luxurious as Mercedes, but they're sportier and cheaper. They aren't quite as pure and fun to drive as BMW's, but they're more practical and elegant. So it all comes down to personal tastes. There really is no way to say one is better than the others. Audi is my personal pick out of three, but that by no means dismisses the impresiveness of the other two brands. Mercedes has some incredible cars. As does BMW. All three manufacturers are successful because they're all a little different, and they offer their respective customers exactly what they want. That's the beauty of the automotive world. Personally, if I won the lotto, you can expect to see a Benz SL65, an Audi R8, and a BMW M5, all three in my garage....

Actually, the RS4 within the last year or two beat the M3 in a comparo. Of course they asterisked it by saying "wait until the next-gen M3 comes out." C/D is a driver's mag and they always have alot of good things to say about Audis, but it always, for them, comes down to driver feel and involvement. Audi and MB fall short in this. MB is great in a straight line, but try to run it through the twisties and your done. Audi is refined, handle great, but lacked the power to keep up with MB and the BMW just was more fun to drive.

It is all subjective and comes down to how you drive, how MUCH you drive, and to some extent, how you want to be percieved. For a long but spirited commute, Audi or MB. For a quick run to the Polo club for martini's and cigars, the BMW. Criuse across country, MB. Long drive in the country, Audi. Weekend at the track, BMW. It is like owning different shoes for different occasions. You wear what suits you best. In a perfect world, we could own all three. And a Ferrari. For sprinting.

Well that comparison isn't valid, we all know Jessica Biel is better. It's not that clear among BMW, Audi and MB.

I would pick a RS4 over a M or a AMG......no question! I own a 08 RS4 right now......After test driving a E46 M3, Porshe Cayman and a 07 Corbvette it was just such a better total package. As for the MB, I just don't care for the looks of the vehicle so is wasn't even an option. I've had plenty of performance cars in my 37 years and the RS4 was just what i wanted. It's great to live in America isn't it...freedom of choice.

No, its not. I was referring to the image associated with Audi and BMW drivers. Its a shame that some judge BMW drivers as yuppies, or preppies or whatever. People should drive a car for the experience. And BMW's provide just that, a great driving experience. Audi's not all that bad either.  Still fun to drive and involving.

BMW is waaay better...in parts, and thier history, so  is Mercedes.

Try to find almost ANY part for the original Quattro, the most iconic Audi ever, no deal.
Try to find nearly enough parts to build your own 2002, no problem.

BMW has it's own tradition section, offering parts, and repair manuals for most of the older models.
Audi dosen't do anything for the Quattro, except maybe put some old rally footage in a commercial for the A6.

It's too bad.
I don't reccomend an Audi to anyone that wants to keep it more than 10 years.
And I love Audi's, just not the current company.

I agree with you on all points. Just leased a new A4 2.0t quattro mainly because of the price difference compared to 328xi. I would have rather had the BMW (more road responce and sporty feel), but the Audi is by far the best bang for the buck on a lease this month. Your talking a $80 difference for equally equipped cars. Looking into putting a chip into the Audi and I'm sure the performance will match the Bimmers. Good post anyway. Cheers.

Yea, I test drove an S4 the other day, and then a 335xi back to back. Both unbelievable cars. I have ruled out the S4. Too expensive for me. (price and gas) I am debating the 335xi, but they are not cheap! Could be worth it for the driving experience. Lease is up at the end of April, so we will see...

to be honest... BMW is kind of snobby and makes it self out to be much better than everyone else based on hype

I fell in love with Audi when i got superior quality in my CS 90 quattro sports sedan.

I love Audi, but can't complain about the qualtity of BMW

to me Audi is produced for a larger client base and are not insulting.  They do it all and in great manner

+ you gotta love them Diesels that BMW doesn't match up to
