okay okay okay,... just kidding.  But in all honesty ... looking back at Audi over the years, I would have to say that only until very recently (the past 2 years) has Audi had more to offer than its "propeller-badged" adversary.  Other than personal taste, I would have to admit that back in the late 90's BMW made some solid stuff.  Don't get me wrong, BMW is definitely a great car company... but I want to hear some reasons people choose Audi as their favorite.  I'll start it out by saying that they're an incredibly inovative company that is always reinventing itself whether it be an amazing new transmission or the most efficient diesels on the planet.  They're a leader in many catergories... Anyone else care to share?

alright this is the opinion of someone who grew up with a roundel in the garage and yells when people car the bemmers instead of Bimmers (BTW I still have love for the BMW, and want an M-coupe like no ones business (he Z3 based one)

So with that out of the way I would have to say that I saw Audi as a safe reliable vehicle that had some tuning potential (except for the 12v) I wanted a BMW to be honest but the parents said no RWD cars, so I looked around for some good German cars with AWD and sure enough Audi popped up, with some research I found models like the S4 and RS4, that just make me want an Audi over a BMW at that point (also seeing a 450AWHP RS4 conversion in person helped) So I was on the hunt for a 1.8t when the parents got me my 12v. As I've been with this car I've grown to love the VAG group and since BMW can't design anything that looks remotely good looking since Bangle took over, I don't think I'll have a problem staying with VAG for a while. But I will always have my eye out for my M-coupe or an E30 M3.

Also just as a point if you look in the late 90's Audi did have cars that would smoke a BMW, they just weren't sold in the USA.

You complain about how they spell Bimmer, then call Chris Bangle "Bengal"? He's not a tiger, bro.

Seriously though, one brand is not better than the other. They have totally different characters, and each is designed to appeal to a different consumer's tastes. Both have had serious technological breakthroughs, both have had ups and downs and both have made some seriously goofy looking cars (318Ti and All-Road anyone?)

^lol couldn't agree more.

i just think audi's are much nicer, inside and out. and i think audi puts more effort into their cars, there always coming up with new things and being innovative. bmw didn't even galvanize the metal to prevent rust. audi put the extra effort in to do so, and as a result, rust is almost unheard of on audi's. just little things like that.

tho i would have to say, bmw's are waaaay funner to drive on a track

I think the Allroad was a really good looking car.  I'm actually hoping that the new Q5 takes a lot of its styling cues from it.

It's an Avant that's been jacked up in some caricature of real off-road cars, it has all the LUXURIOUS (except not) gray plastic stuck to the lower half and it has that silly roof rack that makes it a serious contender for yuppie-mobile of the year. I think the Avant is a good looking car, it's all the goofy crap they strapped to the All-Road in an effort to make it seem less like a station wagon to all the image-conscious yuppie mommies and daddies who don't want to think they drive a wagon that makes the All-Road goofy. It's the same thing as when auto manufacturers all of the sudden decided to start calling wagons "cross-over utility vehicles", despite the fact that they are quite obviously identical on style, proportion and purpose as the cars that were called station wagons and minivans just a scant few years before. "XUV" sounds less dowdy and matronly than "station wagon" or "minivan", so all sorts of people who wouldn't be caught dead in a wagon or van are now flocking to buy this "new class" of vehicle. Makes me sick that people buy this kind of vanity-centric promotional propaganda from the ad execs.

My honest unbiased bottom line opinion being a BMW owner for the past 10 years and an Audi owner for the past 2 years is:

BMW's are more fun/involving to drive without question, and probably better value for the money.  Audi's are more aesthetically appealing - great style/looks.  As far as reliability - from my experience, BMW's are a little better, but not that much better to preclude me from buying another Audi.  Audi and BMW are both great cars.  And I agree Audi is currently on a roll - the new A/S/and RS series are exceptional!   A little pricey, but exceptional enough for me to pay the extra bucks...

Heh, I own one of each, so I'll chime in here. Since the 2002tii, BMW has been about overt sport sedans. Take a look at their M division. The S54 motor (used in E46 M3, Z3/Z4 M cars) took engine of the year for four years in a row. M consistently achieves 100hp per liter of displacement, naturally aspirated, something Audi only recently achieved in the RS models. The S54 is a 3.2L inline six, that made 320 hp, while the engine in the recent S4 is 4.2L V8, making about 340. The RS4 takes the same mill and bumps out 420hp, but I think the price prohibits a comparison between the RS4 and the M3. On the other hand, Audis tend to be better equipped, even at the base level. 6 disc CD changers have been standard on the A4s for some time now, and if I remember correctly, that still isn't standard equipment in a new 3 series, for example. Quattro is nice in poor weather, but on dry road or a track setting, RWD is much more fun. I'd rather have very controllable oversteer that I can drive through a corner than understeering off into a gravel pit.

It's all a matter of personal preference and opinion. They're both excellent cars, but they've got huge differences.

For one thing, given that you spend 95% of your car time inside, it's nice to have interiors that blow away anyone else (except for ridiculously priced cars).  BMW's interiors don't stand a chance against Audi's.  There are a bunch of other reasons I love this car, but that's one of the big ones.

ill agree on the styling Audi is the best but to be honest everytime i see a BMW owner i feel as though the person bought it for the badge all these little high schoolers and yuppies buying BMW's so they can feel on the top tier of the statis quo.Im getting tired of this "if you buy a BMW,youve made it" slogan that seems to be the basis for what america thinks rich should be.Audi has more passion.

Just take a look at BMW or Benz commercials you'll see nothing but them bragging about themselves.BMW's is "we didnt intend on starting a revolution or being part of any sub culture or pop culture,we didnt intend on starting a religion...." or benz"Why did we make car door henges support a 200 pound man.....cause we promised you a Mercedez Benz, thats why."

Take a look at any Audi commercial and all you see is a creative commercial or art.

Not even close. I picked up my first BMW after years of owning classic European sports cars (Porsche 914, Fiat X1/9, etc.) I'm on my second BMW now, not because I want people to think I'm rich when I drive by in my BMW, but because I love the way it drives. It's a stone cold reliable family sedan that is still fun to drive. My first BMW was a 1990 525i that had 211,000 miles on it when I got rid of it. The only thing I ever did to that car was change the oil, spark plugs, and adjust the valves.

I agree with SAudi in that Audi seems to be in between Benz and BMW. Benz seems to me to be all posh and no balls. Even their SL line or the AMG cars; they're fast, but way too heavy. Very luxurious, however. BMW is a bit more bare, but it's still luxurious. I can clip along the highway at 120 in my BMW and there is only a hint of road noise. It's the little things like one touch buttons for windows and memory seats and mirrors programmed to individual keys that spell luxury to me. It's also a hell of a lot sportier than a Benz. Audi is a nice spot in the middle. Again, it's all a matter of personal preference.

Product084: I agree. FWD has no place in any vehicle that is marketed as even close to performance or sporty. There is a reason that no purpose built race car (Formula 1, Lemans, etc.) is front wheel drive.

Benz are bad though all AMG models pull 0-60 times in the low 4's and there all automatic......thats impressive.

Although ill agree Audi is more sleek modern and sporty ...BMW are all about sport and Benz is all about luxury.

And i would disagree about the BMW owners being "yuppies" or "high schoolers" although you do see alot of those types around here in Florida ......i never ever ever see a Benz that even has different rims then OEMs.

Although odd cause Benz wins more DTM titles then Audi does, has a winning F1 team in the past yet i still dont see a Benz as being "sporty"

"Wayy" better?, no way, actually very similar!! Get real, it's not even arguable; BMW, Audi, and MB are all on the same playing field and all fantastic cars. My previous car was a 2000 328Ci, and before that a 1999 Saab 9-5, (which is not on the level of the three German heavyweights), I've also had the C230 (what a tank). The most intelligent input I read here was from someone who said it all comes down to personal opinion, which could not be more correct. I love my Audi just as much as all the other German cars I've owned, as they all have their pros and cons.

Actually AvantgradeA6, I stated in the beginning:

"Other than personal taste, I would have to admit that back in the late 90's BMW made some solid stuff.  Don't get me wrong, BMW is definitely a great car company... but I want to hear some reasons people choose Audi as their favorite."

You're right, it does come down to taste.  But that wasn't the point.  The point was, why?  What is it that you like better?  It wasn't about which manufacturer had a higher caliber product.  You're right, that would be a pointless debate.

I have both, actually, the wife has a BMW. Both are fun to drive. The quattro sells it for me. Also, the cost difference. I can't say that the BMW is "Wayy" better but it seems that BMW's cost "wayy" more. We have a M5 which is kinda "off the charts" but once the wife saw it and drove it, I really had no choice. Again, I like them both for different reasons but the Audi's (both combined) are actually better on my wallet than the one BMW is.

Oh sorry, that was not really directed towards you, thats just what I think about Audi vs BMW vs MB, but if I had to honestly choose a brand for overall build quality and driving experience, personally I would have to say BMW is top.

Not to throw a wrench in this thread, but here it is anyway what would you guys pick if i put up the RS4, vs M Series, vs AMG just the racing brands, no specific model. Would you still pick audi over the rest?
