View Full Version : 5 MONTHS WOW **UPDATE #5**
sntemp 11-22-2007, 07:53 PM Specifics...
2002 Audi A6 3.0
CEL has been on for a few months code came back as an OS sensor. Also my Oil light (yellow one)comes on even though the oil level is fine, I am sure the sensor in the oil pan has gone bad.
So tonight I'm on my way home and the car starts sputtering real bad but never dies. The intensity of the sputter would increase and decrease and the car seemed to run it's best when I sped up. At the same time the sputtering started my CEL started blinking. Also the car now sounds like a Diesel engine.
Any ideas what could be happening?
Thanks for any suggestions.
99A6Q 11-22-2007, 11:14 PM have the codes pulled on it, i would bet that you lost an ignition coil.
I have a 2002 A6 3.0 Quattro, that is the exact sequence and symptoms I experinced ....# 6 coil was bad I replaced it and cleaned the plugs and the car ran fine ,execpta few days later # 1 coil failed and the right side upstream o2 sensor .. I am still working on the engine so I cant tellyou how I made out yet.....I have 93K on it and ime going to spend the time replacing everything that can be replaced within reason ....
auditech79 11-23-2007, 01:04 PM I concur with the ignition coil diagnosis, check the fault codes, if there is a miss-fire on one cylinder replace that ignition coil.
ariesg 11-26-2007, 04:39 AM New to the board. Hello all. Just a stab in the dark. Had a similar problem recently - turned out to be seized water-pump.
sntemp 11-26-2007, 08:58 PM **Update**
Well I finally got it to the shop today, unfortunatly because my problem happened on a holiday today was the first day available. Ignition coil was my problem but I have some additional surprises. I had a total of 5 faults. The Misfire (coil) andthe OS Sensor I knew about.
Then I had two seperate ones related to the Bank 1 camshaft. Unfortunatly I didn't get the code so I don't have it to offer . The mechanic is a very cool and nice guy who I talked with for a while. He's a certified Audi mechanic and seemed to have a lot of knowledge. He said it had to do with Oil Pressure so maybe my oil light wasn't a bad oil pan sensor which I have thought it had always been.
He did say that if it was what his initial feeling was that it would shake/jerk a little on cold start until the pressure built up and I told him that I hadn't experience any of that... so who knows. He should be able to give me a good update tomorrow.
Any ideas what the camshaft issue might be?
By the way the input I get from this place really helps when I'm dealing with mechanics. So if nothing else these forums help some of us from getting ripped off.... I'm sure of that.
Thanks, Michael
sntemp 11-27-2007, 02:58 PM BAd News!!!!!!!!!
The Independent mechanic says I need to carry to the dealer because I am I'm not getting enough oil pressure and he's hoping I can get it covered by AUDI.
He says that the motor is shaking really bad and if he turns it off and back on the shaking stops.
The car is out of warranty and I do not have my history of oil changes, only the last year or so. (bought the car used) I know AUDI isn't going to do anything for me.
What could it be? And how much is this fricken thing going to cost me? Any ideas?
sntemp 12-04-2007, 12:32 PM It sucks to love a car so much but hate owning it equally as much...
OK, They replaced the Ignition coil and it is still missing. They say it could be #4 cylinder stuck open or a cam Belt or something like that has skipped a tooth. Either way they asked me to sit down before giving me the news that the car was still not running properly.
Why do I feel like a family member in a waiting room about to get really bad news about the passing of a loved one?

sntemp 12-28-2007, 01:42 PM Well it isn't a funeral but it hurts still the same.
SLUDGE!!!!!!!!
$3600 plus I had new plugs, and a few other minor things done for a total of $4300
My love hate relationship with Audi continues..........
hxgaser 01-02-2008, 08:49 PM $4300??? for what? And how did they clean the sludge?
ppgoal 01-02-2008, 09:49 PM I really feel for you, man. That's a pile of money.
But I feel a little better about buying a 2.7T - and living in fear of losing a turbo - when expensive problems can happen to the very reliable 3.0 engine.
sntemp 02-15-2008, 11:56 PM Well I still do not have my car back. Notice my first post on this was on the 22nd of November.
So far I'm at $6250
The shop is waiting for one part to get in, the part is an exhaust damper (I think that's what he said)
Heads replaced, timing belt and water pump and all the other associated things they typically do during a timing belt change, new plugs, and a entire list of things that I can't remember.
I'm just waiting to get it back so the transmission can go out on me now.
ARGGGGGHHHHHH
ppgoal 02-16-2008, 11:48 AM I don't recall if you ever told us the mileage, but the timing belt is a normal replacement at ~90k so about $1200-1800 of what you spent was unavoidable. Hopefully between what you paid for the car and what you spent on it, you'll end up with a reliable car for the next few years. It sounds like they rebuilt the engine...practically.
I think the tiptronics call for a transmission fluid flush at some time. That might help avoid a future problem.
Anyway, good luck. I hope that if it runs well for a few months, all this will become just a bad memory.
sntemp 02-16-2008, 11:16 PM The mileage is around 72K, way to early to be having so many problems but so be it. Since they already had the front end off it only made sense to go ahead and have the Timing belt done.
Yes, I plan to get the transmission serviced soon after I get the car back, maybe wait a month or two to absorb this financial hit.
hey51515 02-22-2008, 01:05 AM Thats scary anyone want to buy my A6 02' 3.0 - 36k orig. miles?
sntemp 03-31-2008, 02:02 PM Ok, got the car back and had it back for hour.
Was on the interstate after getting it back and it died on me. Apparently what had happened is something got sucked into the oil pump and clogged it so no oil was getting to the motor.
Now the shop is having to replace the motor.
Eventually I'll get my car back. Working on 5 months now without my Audi (except for that 1 hour)
ppgoal 03-31-2008, 03:34 PM If there is a prize for worst A6 story, you have my vote. I hope it gets fixed soon and you enjoy years of trouble-free driving.
joetm 03-31-2008, 05:06 PM oh my god man i actually never read this post bc i thought it was something i couldnt help with but that really sucks ... so you probably have paid your car value in these repairs hopefully itll last for another 100k with a new trans
this is the worst story i have ever heard

WeezyTT 04-01-2008, 12:52 AM =[
sntemp 05-02-2008, 03:00 AM The shop has everything back together and is having a problem with oil pressure. The two valves where the oil injectors are if you take them out and cover the holes with your thumbs oil flows to the engine however if you put the valves back in no oil will flow to the engine. It's not getting enough pressure to push those valves open.
The shop is trying to figure out what's causing it and I suggested it might be the oil pump.I think they are trying to explore other things because they don't want to fork out the money for the new pump.
Am I off base thinking it is the oil pump?
joetm 05-02-2008, 03:19 AM is this work all under warranty??
sntemp 05-02-2008, 04:46 AM No, the car is about 10K miles out of warranty. However this latest work is being done on the shops dime.
joetm 05-02-2008, 11:11 AM well cant argue with getting something for free in ur situation
let us know if it was the oil pump
Joeski 05-02-2008, 01:31 PM I think I might have found the highest bridge and jumped!
Sorry about your misfortune!
OOOO
bostonsbesta6 05-03-2008, 12:57 PM WTF!!! this story is crazy but i have a question. Why Didnt you jus do an engine swap???????? you would have saved atleast $2000. i just did mine. i have a 99 a6 2.8with 87000 miles. water pump went, bent valves, bad oil leak. Swap out for 2001 a.6 engine with 49000 miles which cost me $1800. Labor was $1200. Total cost was $3000. what u paid $6000 for an 02' is crazy.
