I have a 99 a6 w/ a 2.8 which the timing belt broke.  I was wondering if anyone has any reference to places where they were successful finding an affordable motor or any tips.  I am new to forums so let me know if I am doing anything wrong.  Just so you know it has 128k on it, timing belt, water pump and tensioners were changed at 104k.  Tensioner locked up causing the belt to break and valves to bend.  Any advice would be appreciated since I dont have any money.  I'll see if I can get some pics on here if I can fugure it out.

How did it lock up? I found a few engines on Ebay for fairly cheap with a warranty.

Compare the engine + INSTALLATION price (could be more than engine itself) with the procedure for taking the engine head off and replacing the valves.

I had this repair a month ago - a friend of mine did it in one day: $300 for work, $200 5 in and 2 out valves (AAH engine has 12 in total), $200 new belt pamp etc.

mechanic says all valves are bent and the cam has a couple dings in it too.  He is going to get an estimate for the headwork and let me know.  I also dont know how the idler locked up, it was either a defective part or someone was rough installing it.  Of course they both give a 1 yr warranty and it lasted 1yr and 4 months.  My luck.

exhaust valve costs $30 for 2.8 AAH here in russia (VAG original), same for intake. Cam is $550 for VAG (used is $100). Nonoriginal is much cheaper, but I don't belive anyone here will recommend using it.
