We had an opportunity to try my 97 Avant quarto in the snow yesterday and it would not go! My 89 200QT or 88 90Q never had this problem! My wife’s 2006 Mini-van even went OK.

My neighbor was helping me clear the driveway. He started the Avant and pressed on the accelerator, but it didn’t move! I had to explain to him that he needed to put it in reverse to go backwards and drive to go forwards.

It’s Ok because he’s a transplant from the Kentucky hills and has just learned how to wear shoes. He still talks a bit funny and  thinks that shine is something you drink – not what you do to your shoes.

Seriously – The Avant was fantastic.

Please don't put words in my mouth -- I have enough trouble with my foot getting in the way!

I like my neighbor. He keeps things interesting with his lapses in judgement and hill country logic.

Here is the latest info about my neighbor from Ky.

It snowed here in NH last night and this AM I found my neighbor and his wife in the trees at the front of my house trying to get his 4X4 back on the road. It seems that he could get the truck moving out of his driveway but couldn’t stop or turn when he hit the icy road. His wife had a chain attached between his tractor and the pickup and was trying to pull him out. (I still can’t figure out why he bought a tractor because our lots are wooded and only 3 acres each.)  She was not budging his truck so I offered to see if my A6 Q Avant would be better. We connected the chain to the Audi and I pulled him out without a problem. My only concern was that he would hit my car when he got out but he didn’t.

Now he can’t understand why a “family station wagon has more power” than his super-duper tractor. In addition, he is upset that he insisted his company get him a 4X4 pickup (AKA Country Cadillac) instead of a “Snooty Yankee vehicle”.  Someday I’ll let him know that it is German!

It has 16" Michelin Pilot Exaltos -only because I got a good deal on them.
I actually prefer Yokohamas. The Avid TRZ and T4 are very good and the Avan S.4 is fantastic.

The Yoko TRZ is the best kept secret in the tire world - inexpensive, good milage, fantastic grip, and excellent ride.

I have a 96 A6 Q and I live in Duluth MN (We have hills from hell). I also have a Chevy Suburban 4x4.

This is my 1st Winter with the Audi. I have never been more impressed with an AWD in my life.

The latest from my neighbor ----

Yesterday, we got a horrendous snowstorm in New England. It started at 2 PM and dropped 1-2 inches per hour, sometimes 3, until 9 PM. Driving was so bad that the snowplows couldn’t get thru the traffic to clean the roads. It took me 4 hours to do a trip that normally takes an hour. When I finally got home I drove the A6 thru a 2 foot pile of snow at the end of the driveway and parked it in 12 inches of snow near the garage.

After I got home I had a stiff drink and waited until the snow stopped before attempting to clean my driveway. At 9:30 I went outside to clean things up and found most of the drive cleared. It seems that my neighbor had gotten upset that his tractor didn’t work in the snow, so he bought a big snow blower attachment so he could have fun. I think he got my wife’s rose bushes and I know he got the new pine trees, but he didn’t hit the Audi. The last we saw he was headed towards town to do the fire station, municipal parking lots, and local public drinking establishment. He really likes the drinking establishment because they don’t have them where he come from.

I think I join him after he does the fire station and parking lot.

We had the same storm come through yesterday. Massive snowstorm, and the snow fell at about 2 inches an hour. None of the roads were plowed. The Audi was unbelieveable. I was passing all sorts of spun out cars, even pickups. Going up hills, down hills, through snow over a foot deep. It didnt matter. I have never driven anything this good in the snow.

Were you the guy doing donuts in the parking lot of the local drinking establishment?

Latest development re Audi Q in snow

We got another snow storm today with 4-6 inches and my Audi A6 did not do any better than the rest of the nuts on the road. All I could do was crawl along at 25 mph in the passing lane of Rt 495 with the rest of the idiots.

Nocternal -- I know you'll find this shocking -a Dodge minivan was able to pass me because he was in the center lane and it went two cars lengths faster than mine. I can hardly waight to get home tonight and tell my neighbor about it. I know he dosen't understand my Audi but he certainly will understand the Minivan because it is like a truck with a cap and no hood.
