Default Audi a6, year 2000, won't shut down

I have a strange problem w/ my audi. When I turn the ignition to shut the car off, the engine keeps idling and only the electrical shuts off. Plus, when I start my car sometimes the engine just keeps turning over and over w/ no start. I have to wait a while to start it. I stopped driving it and am trying to fix the problem. Do you think it is the ignition switch? Or maybe the ignition column? Maybe the starter?

Sounds like the switch contact(s) are sticking closed or failing open. Either way, a switch replacement would fix this. Since your engine is actually turning over, your starter sounds like it's fine. I've also seen just the opposite of your problem where the car starts and shuts off as soon as the key is released.
