98 a4 2.8 30v quattro TIP

problem: on a cold start the engine eccessivley cranks then after about 6-10 seconds engine kicks over...

stuff done: new fuel filter, new fuel pump, new sti wires and plugs, new tempature sensor, thermisdate, new ignition, starter is farely new

extra: when car is started you can hear the fuel pump returning fuel to the tank and u can smell fuel and see smoke out muffler.
if the car is turned off for like a gas stop it starts up perfect

Try pinching the fuel return line off and letting the car sit to see if it will start right away. I suspect you have a fuel pressure regulator that is bleeding fuel pressure in the rail when the car is off. Considering you have already replaced the pump and filter, its unlikly that the pressure is bleeding off that side. You may also have some injectors that are bleeding off pressure. Come to think of it that seems more likly considering you say you see and smell gas when it finally starts. In any case i think your bleeding fuel pressure somewhere.
