I just purchased a 1986 Audi Coupe GT Commemorative Edition. It runs great but the only problem it has is that the gauge cluster doesn't work. Is this a common problem? I can't tell my gas level, coolant temp, speed, and the rpms.
If this is a common problem, is there an easy way to fix it?

Is it possible that this model, like the 89-91, has continuity that if the glove box, license plate light are burned out, instrument panel doesn't light up.

If it is all electronic dash, maybe not relevant.
Cheers,
George
It is only the instrument cluster that is out. Anyone ever encountered this problem?

After doing a bit more searching, the Commemorative Edition was offered in 86 but the most desirable was the late 87, sometimes called the 1987.5
I was not able to find any additional info about the defective gauge back lighting so it might not be a very common problem. I would try to remove the cluster and visually check the connectors as well as check the circuit board(s) for any burned out resistors, diodes, voltage regulators, etc.
