Not come with a reat defrost window? I do not have any of the heater lines going across the back window...and as a suprise, right, I do not have the rear defroster, but it does have the button on the dash that lights up and does nothing. Hm...

Ummm.... maybe the previous owner had the back window replaced with a non defroster eqiuipped window.

ALL US spec A6 vehicles should have a rear window defroster, it definately sounds like somebody put in a cheap replacement window in the rear. Are you sure this vehicle hasn't been in a wreck? Ever do a carfax report?

I would like to see a pic of this "non defroster rear window" I never ever saw a rear without defrosters.

Didn't have to be in a wreck, could have just been a chip or crack in the rear window but anything is certainly possible. I thought it was a law here (well Canada at least) that all rear windows have defroster lines run across?

Carfax is squeaky clean. Well except the one I was involved with when some lady hit my front, but that was after I got the car. I will post pictures of it later once I get it back from the shop, later on today.

OK...the rear glass is a factory rear window. Has the Audi logo and all the numbers on the bottom left of it.

Ok- So maybe it is the incorrect Audi window. It has to be a replacement, right? I guess your decision now is to either live without the defroster, or get the rear replaced. I am not sure if there is some way to buy the heater element and apply it to the window, or if you have to replace the entire window. You should have some sort of electrical connector near the edge of the window where it plugs into the rear window heater lines. These are all guesses btw. Let us know if you figure this out.

i also concur that i believe it is illegal to produce cars in the US without rear defroster elements. definitely sounds like the previous owner had it replaced for some reason or another and either didn't want to pay for the correct window, or the place that installed it had absolutely no idea what they were doing and shouldn't even be in business.

I will take pictures and post them up tonight of the window and the sides of it.

I mean you are able to see the heating elements in the window right? Thewindow does have some really small zig zag wires going through the glass from one end to the other.

Here are the photos...as you can see I have nothing on the side of the window to even have anything hook up to.

And this picture shows that there are no heater lines going across it...

Thats definetly not a factory window, if you got that from a dealership then go back A.S.A.P and tell them to fix it cause that is ilegal. if you bought it from a private party, then get 500$ and go fix it.

I am not too sure if the glass you got is original Audi, even though you have logo on it.It ishard to believe that this is original Audi, asitisand not Hyundai...that will cut corners to save few bucks.I willpost the pic of myglass, with a logo andyoucan try to compare it, and seeif you are missing something on the marking. I willpost it tomorrow.

I have seen some after market fitments of defrosters. It is like a glued, cheapass stripes of heating elements, and they don't look good at all, worst, they start falling from various places within months of use. If I were you, I will get a new rear glass.

OK..here are some pictures I took of my window marking. All the markings are there just like the rest of the windows. Hard to take pictures with a tinted window inside a dark garage though...If I cannot get any information from here I will go and ask the dealer.

Also what are the wavy little metal things inside the window? You can see them best in the middle picture.

See I have a 1998. I hope they are the same, but I dont think that a Audi dealer would sell a car with a non factory window.

The only similar thing I have seen is on front windows with de-frosters. They come with very thin squiggly lines. An option is cold European countries, and the UK.

The faint lines on front de-frosting windows make them pretty expensive, hence they don't use them on rear windows.

Since you have what looks like a part number, see what part description you get from the dealer. It might be something like, rear heated windscreen (near invesible heater elements)...

Does look great though.... [8D]

Another question, does it actually work?

MiniSpdRcr
12-26-2007, 09:23 AM
Well it does seem to work...I live in OK so cannot really tell. But it does get rid of the fog on the rear window.

OK...those lines in the window are the defroster. Got that cleared up from Audi.
