I've found an 2004 A6 2.7T that's similarly priced to other 2.7Ts in the market. I contacted the dealer about it for service records, and was told it was one of the dealer's service loaner vehicles.

This leads me to two conclusions: it was probably well-maintained, but might have been beaten up on the road by some drivers.

What's your opinion? Would this be a better or worse buy than a regular lease return vehicle?

Thanks!

Considering how badly loaner cars are treated by drivers, I'd say skip.

Yeah, I'd say skip too for the same reasons unless they offer a nice discount with warranty.

Yeah skip it. I beat the tar out of rental cars. If I was mad at having to drive a loaner I'd rip it appart.

Well you will be surprised to know that most of the certified pre-owned vehicles from Audi and BMWs are used as loaner cars at some point of time. These cars are usually the ones that were leased for two-three years, and between the period of lease signed off, and start of certification process they are used as loaners. Once they get into the certification process, they are left alone for selling and are not used by dealers for anything else but drive tests by prospective buyers/ So, if the car is certified, I won't sweat.
