basically since the turbo makes boost under 2k rpms and hits 20psi shortly there after, it basically doesnt have lag since anytime you hit the gas, you have boost

3 things..1 ive never hit 20lbs of boost. and second if u read i corrected myself, its just ive had a rough few weeks and just worked an 11 hour shift...my brain is not on right now. and third, whats that swooshing noise if you mash the throttle before 3krpms? i know what spooling sounds like and its not that, from past experience i was told thats lag, thats y i thought thats what it was. should i not be able to hear that noise?

Here we go again.
1. If you are not chipped, you will not ever see 20 lbs.
2. Your correction was not right.
3. That whoosh sound is most likely the intake sucking in air.
4. Lag is not physically present. It's a term that refers to the downtime of taking a big turbo awhile to spool. The intermittent time from -20inHG or what have you to +boost is what lag is. Since our cars hit a full 7-9psi by 2000 rpms, there virtually is no lag.

how do you hear a k03 spool up? a k03 is almost always spooled up already. the sound u people hear is the turbo working and sucking in air through the intake, although i have a hard time understanding how you even hear that tiny thing making 8 lbs of boost...

it is.  but since you never drop below where the ko3 peaks crusing, it doesnt lag

it is, the k03 hits peak boost practically as soon as you hit the gas which means virtually no lag.

on a bigger turbo, when you hit the gas, there is a small amount of time before you see the boost gauge go from vacuum to, say, 20 lbs of boost. that time is when the turbo is spooling up (takes a while to get to over 200k rpms), and then it hits full boost and is sucking in a LOT of air, creating the sound which most people hear.

no, the turbine wheel of some turbo's at full boost can exceed 200k rpms. even small holset's spin around 140k, so i would imagine the k03 in somewhere in that area

Compared to 2003 Saab 9-3, i can't hear anything.  In the Saab, i could definetely hear it when the window was down.  WIth the Audi, since the engine seems louder, i wanna say like a diesel, it is really hard to hear.  Even in my brothers GTI it is hard to notice as well.

Before my mods, I could never hear my K03S spool, but if I hammered it to 3k and shoved the clutch pedal to the floor right at that point, I could hear the DV.  Once again, could never hear the turbo spool.  This was 2 weeks ago, before the chip/k&n/swiss cheese mod.

Funny your should bring up a Saab. I have a new 9-3 aero with the 2 liter turbo. It's my daily driver. I was looking at buying an Audi 1.8t as a donor car for my swap this spring, and when I drove THAT, compared to the stock Saab I drove to the guy's house, I could hear NO turbo on the 1.8t. my Saab is notably louder...

I think some people are confusing intake sound (which I clearly heard on stock airbox) with a wound up turbo.

PS - didn't buy the 1.8t, had low compression and high miles... the search continues...

When i drove all the "stock" 1.8T's at work i really couldn't hear the turbo on the manual cars, i could hear it a lot better on the automatic models, probably because it has a lot more load.
