Howdy, I'm new! ...and I'm posting my problems already...what a friend I am.

So here's the situation - I have a 1991 Audi V8 - probably not the most common Audi out there. It's a huge luxury sedan.

Specs:
1991 Audi V8. Automatic tranny.3.6 Liter V8. 100K Miles (maybe). It is a Quattro.

Symptoms:
Steering has HUGE slop on it. I'm talking 3-5 inches of play on the steering. It was fine about a year ago, has been steadily getting worse and worse.

I found a page on the web that talked about this exact problem being the steering rack assembly mounts being broken on the frame. The solution was to remove the steering rack, weld up and reinforce the frame, and put the rack back on.

My questions are:

-Does this sound like it might be the same problem? - I know, hard to tell without looking.
-What things can I look for to confirm?
-How difficult is this to repair?
I'mfairly mechanically inclinedbut mostly on old american vehicles.I've installed lift kits on american pickup trucks that required complete disassembly of the typical solid axle under leaf springs drivetrain. I'm sure the Audi is not going to be anything like that.

I guess I'm wondering if anyone has come across this before and has any tips and tricks before I get in over my head.

Update:
I just had a good look at it. The steering rack sits between the firewall and the motor, much higher than I anticipated. Not very easy to reach at.
HOWEVER, it looks like the broken frame part that holds it is right accessible from the drivers side wheelwell. Like I can take a wheel off and there is the metal part that holds the rack in place.

I'm thinking I can just weld it without even taking the rack off? Anybody tried this?
