This is one of those answers, "If you don't know, then you don't have it."
Or.... "You'd know it if you had it."
The CVT is another type of tranny.
Here's a quote from Audi: Multitronic™ Unparalleled smoothness, improved fuel economy and more dynamic performance are the immediate rewards of Audi's new stepless multitronic Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT); 20 mpg city/29 mpg highway for multitronic™, versus 19 mpg city/28 mpg highway for Tiptronic. The heart of the multitronic transmission is called a variator. Its vanadium-hardened steel construction, encased in oil, has already proven that our system is not only more capable than belt-driven CVTs, it's also more durable. Manual gear selection mode is available, as with the 5-speed Tiptronic® transmission, and six simulated gear ratios can be selected. In the automatic mode, multitronic calculates the optimum gear ratio with the aid of a Dynamic Regulating Program (DRP) according to engine load, the driver's preferences and driving conditions.
