View Full Version : problem after problem
m.asheim 01-10-2008, 01:45 PM I boughtan 01 A6 2.7T with 80,000 miles in July 07 and have had non-stop problems. Some vacuum line that the repair shop had never heard of going out went within a couple weeks, the water pumpstarted leaking in August and now its the oil pan. Is this a common thing with these cars or do I just have a lucky one?
mustang196718 01-10-2008, 01:58 PM kinda sounds like you might have gotten one that hasn't been very well maintained by the previous owner. i thnk they vacuum lines going bad eventually might be typical on the 2.7t, but the water pump shouldn't be going yet. maybe someone with a 2.7t can chime in here, most of my knowledge is on my 4.2.
dmrdennie 01-10-2008, 02:54 PM I boughta my 2.7 earlier this year knowing that it hadn'tbeen maintained. I'd expected problems but in reality, it hasn't been bad at all. No leaks of any kind. I had to buy tires. Nearly all of the switches were bad.. (the mirror switch, hazard relay, etc). After about 4k or so miles, it's actually been a great car. I'm going to have the timing belt done next week because I figure it's due but I'vehad noindications that it may be going out.
Joeski 01-10-2008, 04:18 PM I know for sure that if your water pump is leaking, you better do a timing belt and water pump service. If that timing belt breaks you are really gonna hate life! It should be performed at 75K.Your water pump leaking is a good sign that its time to do the service!
OOOO
m.asheim 01-10-2008, 08:47 PM Thanks for the heads up, but that was done before I purchased the gem. I really don't know much about Audi's, but my fiance and I had purchased a Q7 earlier in the year and I love that one so much I wanted to get another Audi. I just wasn't expecting so many problems.
formulagigi 01-11-2008, 12:04 AM Vaccum hose issues are pretty common from I have seen/heard.
If your water pump was just changed, I would take the car back to that shop then.
auditech79 01-11-2008, 01:07 AM The 2.7T can be a maintance hog when it gets over 60k. It leaks oil, needs major services, the after run water pump starts to leak (under the intake manifold) cv boot crack ect.
nemohm 01-11-2008, 12:49 PM " Maintance hog"
Very accurate description!!
There were times when the german cars were reliable ... ( '80 s are long gone).
Design based on principle of growing complexity does not proveengineering accomplishmentsto me. Smart things are simple!

Iagree, however Germans are well aware of "the new-simplicity" (trans.), however inorder to compete with foreign markets they opted for what is commonly reffered toas "engineered obsolescence" rather than "over-engineering" to make up for lost profits.
I think the time of engineered obsolecense is fading, and we will begin to see improved reliablility... hopfully.
ppgoal 01-11-2008, 01:46 PM Knock on wood - not too many problems with my 2003. I had the rear transmission seal replaced under warranty at 48k. The alternator failed at 70k and the headlight washers leaked and I eventually disconnected them, but no other issues. I chipped at 79k and replaced the clutch/flywheel and secondary water pump at 90k. I attribute the clutch/flywheel to the extra power on top of the fact the original owner did some towing. It's at 110k now and running fine. I have my indie shop check it out completely with every oil change and the suspension is fine.
tkrick 01-11-2008, 01:54 PM I bought the same model same year, and have nothing but problems too. First I had to replace the torque converter, then a couple o2 sensors and valve cover gasket, radiator, and last month found that a turbo needed replacement. Since the engine was being pulled out, I went ahead and replaced both turbos, timing belt, water pump, thermostat, plugs, etc. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this will keep it running well for a while but I have dumped a lot of cash into it since buying it.
nemohm 01-11-2008, 03:50 PM For the $$$ spent on repairs a nice japaneese car could be aquired!
I'm not starting an argument, just on crossroad:
- to repair
- or to dump the "maintence hog" and never get involved with "german engineering" again?
bobbyo 01-11-2008, 06:00 PM I went through this a few years back with a "used" (p.c. would be "pre-owned") Mercedes. It was a 1981 280E that I bought relatively cheaply in '91 or so with about 60K miles.Got it from a dealership with absolutely no record of previous maintenance history. Mistake!!! You must know the service history of any used German vehicle if you expect it to be your faithful friend. In my case things started out OK but the little niggly problems, primarily electrical but some mechanical, started building up, and once they started they just wouldn't stop. I ended up losing faith in the car and traded it in, and probably spent more on maintenance in the five years I owned it than I did to buy it.
Caveat Emptor!
Y2gplaya69 01-11-2008, 06:10 PM First of all knock on wood!!! I have own a 01' 2.7T with 87k on it now for over a yr. (It was 75K whenI got it). Mainly, I drive it around town as a daily commute, but occasionally I do drive it on interstate for an extended period of time, and the only thing I need to replace was an o2 sensor,a window regulator and a 80k maintenance at the dealershipin addition my car is mod with chips so I guess I am pretty lucky.
Wilcox 01-11-2008, 06:12 PM uhg! '00 2.7T 73K miles. I know about the problem with this car and my first one popped up last week. Check engine light went on and oil leaking badly. They will say valve covers and cam seals, you can count on them sending you a 7.5 hour estimate for it too.
nemohm 01-14-2008, 04:22 PM What makes so many Audi engines this high-maintenance demanding?
There (on the forum) is nothing but problems with engines discussed, the rest of the cars (components and systems) seem to be fine.
Oil leaks are the most common complain. Seems to me that majority of the cars had undergone service work on any (all) kind of engine seals.
It’s obvious that this “engineering” feature is present for many model years. Usually mistakes and deficiencies are fixed by the manufacturer the next year (?).
With oil leaks persistent for years and showing predominantly at 40-50k I’m wondering if this is a programmed state of the car or demonstrated inability to design and build?
Why there are so many leaks? Is there any technical reason for this?
(Materials, workmanship, design flaws or all of the above?
darkshadow 01-19-2008, 10:08 PM GET RID OF IT AS SOON AS YOU CAN!!! I bought a 00 2.7T with 69k on it. I've spent more than 5k in repairs. These cars go to crap after 60k miles. What a shameFOR a car that cost as much as they do. I just replaced the drive shaft last week. Dealer wanted $1,200 FOR THE PART ONLY, I found it online for $450.00 and my local guy installed it for $150.00, If you didn't finance, GET RID OF IT!!!!!! I'm trading mine ASAP!!

Aceboympk 01-25-2008, 10:34 PM Hey guys,I just posted as New Member here: http://www.audiforums.com/m_779081/tm.htm
I'm looking for advice from folks who have gotten to know the 2.7T engine well enough (good experiences and bad) to help me make a decision whether or not to move forward buying a 2004 A6 2.7T S-Line with 45k miles from an out of state dealer who has 100% positive (515) feedback on ebay since 2001.
Please visit the thread and vote in the poll. I need to know if IN GENERAL the 2.7T is an engine I'm better off avoiding than buying.
Thanks,
Mark
