so I noticed that at 80MPH, by '99 A6 2.8L is at 3000 RPM with the car in 5th gear. this seemed a little hight to me,especially since its a 5 speed automatic.I drove my other cars, (4 speed automatics)and they were much lower, between 2,000 and 2,500 RPM's
Is everyone else at this RPM's? is there a reason that these cars run at a higher rate?
Just making sure all is good.
Thanks for you input!!!!

it is the same for me. Anyhow the car seems to have more power near the 3K rpm than 2K so it works for me.

About 3000 rpm. Small engine + large car = need some revs!

gigi.... c'mon dont tell me you never drove past 70... but then again if my A6 looked as tight as yours, i would want to drive slow so everyone could check it out

Im probably around the high 2's also. But after 80 they skyrocket. Also if your car is cold it will also rev higher

It stays around 3k RPM's when my car shifts into 5th on the freeway and gives me decent acceleration, which I think is the point. Then If I so choose, I can punch it and down shift into 4rd for a little show and go run on the I-10! :)

2001 A6Q Tip, about 3K rpm at 80mph.. I remember my '85 5000S, 5 cylinder doing at 60mph 3200 rpm.

Just keep in mind that lower rpm does not necessarily mean better gas mileage or less wear on an engine. Every engine has a different peak efficiency. My '80 rabbit got better gas mileage running at 75mph in fourth (around 3500rpm)than it did at 60mph (around 3000 rpm). These engines seem to perform better around 73mph in fifth. I get much better gas mileage there than I do when cruising at 60.
In any case, I wouldn't worry about it. These engines are extremely reliable.
