My mmi screen is black, does not go down and the control panel buttons for navigation and cd is dead as well, i have been reading here, is it only a flashing issue? , or what more can go wrong, is this a common problem?, thanks in advance. 2004 A8L

On an 04 model it could very well be a programming issue. You would have to take it to the dealer and have the codes read in the MMI and see what the software level is.
Another thing that could be the problem is the fiber optic data loop. If any componet on the data loop malfunctions or if the data loop itself is damaged ALL the systems on that loop will cease to function. Like lets say the radio goes out, then everything in the MMI won't work.

Can a tech respond to the above question. I have the same problem on an 06 A8 and I dont want the dealer to be able to overcharge me

It depends on how long the flash takes, usually about an hour of time + diagnosis, probably about $200-$300.
