Ok guys i'm getting closer to time to buy my a6 2.7T. I'm 19, the car will be my dd, but I also have plans to go stg. 3 within a couple months of the purchase.

So what I'm looking for are opinions on both. How does each respond to mods? Obviously the 6 speed is better for launching but the tip would be good for comfort. Any stg. 3 tips?

Just let me know what you have, what you think, and what you'd rather have.

Edit: I'm assuming the 6 speed would be faster in the 1/4, by how much?

Is one or the other more prone to failure?

It really depends on what you want really. The tip tranny equipped with the 2.7T is no slouch, its been proven it can handle over 400 horse power.
Both of them also have their problems as well, on the automatics the torque converter tends to fail, more precisely the TCC (torque converter clutch) fails.
On the manual of course the clutch needs to be upgraded when going stage III.
New torque converter cost~ $800
New clutch ~$800-$2,000
So what im saying is...............its up to you.
I would go with the 6 speed IMO if you could find it, they're rare over here on the west coast.

It all depends what you want. If you're a hardcore enthusiast and you're planning on making big mods or just plain like drivin manual then start looking for a 6 because they're scarce and more $$$. But if you're in between and you want to do a few performance upgrades but at the same time you want the simplicity and comfort of the auto, tip is also a good choice...as long as its an Audi. I'm looking for a 02-04 6MT and there's only 2 in the chicago area and they're well over 60k which is my limit. Manual is just plain out fun to drive (unless you're in heavy traffic) so I'ma vote for the standard. Make the best choice.

If u r planning on heavy mods . . . get the manual!!!! I got the tip and I wish it was a 6speed.  But like everyone has said . . . they are more $$$ and really hard to find. I also dont have the money to repair another effed up clutch from some a-hole who doesnt know how to drive. My old A4 cost me $2300 to repair the clutch. I just use the A6 as the family car now. we got an A4 to turn into a rocket.

And the 6MT is not that much faster in the 1/4 mile. I don't know the exact numbers but it's problably around 1/2 a second quicker than the Tip. If you drive them appropiately neither are prone to break down since they're good transmissions. In MT ALWAYS put the clutch as far down as it goes and you'll save a few thousand miles into it.

Not depressing the clutch all the way will slip the clutch just a little bit more, it won't be a signaficant decrease in clutch life. Un-less your shifting only pressing the clutch half way down, which is stupid.

When sometimes I got stuck on a freeway for hours in a crawling traffic, I thank myself for not picking six speed. Depends where you drive and under which conditions. As much as I like manual, I hate when you have to press the clucth 2000 times.

I drove a manual from 2001 until this year.  Where I live in Jersey, traffic is as common as "Gotti" boys in the mall, so it was always an adventure.

For feeling connected to and in control of the car, nothing beats a manual.  However, an auto provides you a level of comfort and ease that the manual can't match.  In drag racing, auto's are generally the preferred trans because they are consistent.

I bought my car with the auto as my wife may need the car on occasion (something to think about if you may ever be in a situation of needing someone else to drive your car...read drunk).  The auto also matches up really well with the turbo as the engine can hold boost much more efficiently between shifts.  At the end of the day, a modded tip and a modded mt will be very similar in performance.  The difference will be the tip's consisteny.

Also, the A6 is NOT a sports car, not even close.  It is a luxury sedan with some balls that can be modded.  Since you can't drive it like a TT or Vette, the manual isn't as much of a necessity and can be more of a liability.

Well, after driving various performance cars over the past 7 years all with manual transmissions, I can certainly tell you that while it's fun, it can get tiresome real quick.  The op is only 19 though, so I would say go for the manual and work on your leg muscles.   I just don't think it's necessary, or that much more "fun", to have a manual in a 4k pound luxury sedan.  Especially since the manual is not more robust or problem free than the auto.

Well i've always leaned more towards manual, and my last two cars have been, because i love to race and be in control of the car. However my thoughts are that with stg 3, it doesnt really matter because it's still going to stomp most everything on the road. I drive mostly in off traffic times so that's not so much an issue. I don't let people drive my car when I'm drunk just because it's my baby, I'd rather sleep wherever i am, find a ride, or walk to a bus stop lol. However such activities as road head are much harder in manuals. It's so hard to shift. Haha but anyway that's my dilema is it's nice to have the ease and comfort of an auto, but it's also more fun and in control to have a manual.
