Yeah, diesel is definately not utilized like it should... i guess there is a reason why all semi's use diesel right?  for fuel mileage?  I think even new diesel engines get rid of the smoke & smell????

The original purpose of diesels in semis was that diesels offer FAR more torque than a gasoline engine, and at *much* lower RPMs. Semis need all the torque they can get, and diesels are the only engines that can offer it. You're right though, they do also get better fuel economy.

The new passenger car diesel engines are VERY good. There's virtually no smoke, no smell, and you don't even hear that classic diesel "clank clank clank" metallic sound. American emissions regulations are SO tough on diesels, though, that most companies don't bother bringing their Euro diesels to the US. That, and what I said before. There is almost no interest in diesels in the American car market. For that reason I've been looking at the Mercedes E320 CDI for my Mom. It gets about 35-37 MPG highway, which is fantastic.

also.... and this is just a question, in terms of how advanced the germans are,

where is the german hybrid?

The Germans are playing a different game. They are testing hydrogen and fuel cell technologies.

There was a high profile, at least in Europe, give away of "zero emission" BMW 7 series cars on leases.

Here's an article if you are interested. This was back in Nov 2006...

Ahhh yes... the great debate. American? Euro? Japanese?

My favorite car brand for YEARS has been Nissan. They are innovative, stylish, reliable, and still edgy enough to make cars like the 1992 Nissan Sentra SE-R, which is a rare yet awesome car if you can find one.

The Japanese are smart... they not only took notice of what American engineers (who by the way are absolutely PHENOMAL despite all this US hatred) and the German engineers (who eventually lost out in the war to our American engineering haha jk) and turned these ideas into cars like the Toyota Camry, Nissan Altima, and the absolutley barbaric Skyline GTR-34.

The Japanese, to me, are where cars should be at in this stage of time. Sure, Audi's revolutionized all wheel drive and big V8's made drag racing what it is today, but Japan has done all of that, and still somehow managed not to sacrifice anything they started out with. Their cars are very reliable, cheap on parts, and still contemporary and stylish.

if someone offered me a BMW M5 or an Audi S5 or a Z06 or an Aston Martin or a Skyline GT-R, I'd take the Skyline hands down.

Honestly, the Japanese may not be MUCH farther ahead than the rest of the world's technology, but they are still ahead. Germany and the US are about equal, we just focus on different things.

For your information, most of the japanese car thec come from German and American research....  They had just upgrade it..

For sure american car are pretty good, but dont talk about their reputation.... Since the late 90's, they had built good cars, but the american car industry is mostly renowned for his relliable price not for their advance tech or for their engine efficiency.... When you talking about European car, you're talking about technology, efficiency, well made car and overall performance.

Also, stop talking about the Z06 and his supramacy... for sure that the best bang for the buck if you want a pure performance car and you dont want to pay 200 0000000000000000$$$$ but when you're compared the Z06 engine to a F430 engine,, you show me how american peoples are blind!!!
In other words, stop bullshitting!!! The only things that matter at this time for you (american peoples),, is to elected your ****ing president and a good one this time please!!!!!!!!!... Sorry for that,, but i had to say this.....

Maybe the american brand built some great V8 and hybrid car, but when your reading articles about fuel efficiency and envirommental respect,, you will understand that the battery thats commin from the hybrid car is more detrimental for the environment when his life ended than the entire pollution that produce a v10 car after 200 k..

Do a little research on the LS7 in the current Z06 and then determine how "low-tech" it is.  As to the rest of your post, pretty much just a jumble of rubbish.  I would be interested to know where you are from though so we can find things to mock about your country.

The Corvetter engine is HIGHLY respected among all car makers. Period. And the ZO6 is a freak of nature that is not to be toyed with. Anyone who denies that is a pathological liar.

hmmm...Canada you say.  I would guess Quebec based on your somewhat limited skills with the English language.  Being from Quebec, that means that there are a short list of things that you spend all your time pissed off about:

1.  Why the rubes in the rest of Canada can't be more like the sophisticated Quebecois'.

2.  Why American's are so stupid, rude and ignorant.

3.  Wondering why Quebec province couldn't just break away and float to France.

4.  Why the Habs suck so bad and how it isn't fair that Danny Briere wouldn't sign there.

5.  The inferiority of the pushrod's as a valvetrain when compared to OHC's.

So, while you sit around in a cafe sipping some crappy French wine and eating food with way too much sauce; discussing the inferiority of pushrods and debating who America should choose to be its next President; just remember how comfortable and happy your existence is with big brother to the south taking care of defending that hunk of tundra you call a country.  If it were up to us we'd all hope you'd get off your rears and start processing that tar sand so we have more oil for our 505hp 7.0L V8's to use...but alas, Al Gore won't let us, because he wants us to be pussies, just like you.

***The above posting was pure sarcasm and only typed in rebuttal to the crap posted by Grelot.  NJGOAT in no way condones mocking the fine country of Canada, or its people...even the French ones.***

Canada is awesome! The are a superpower in the world and everyone wants to migrate to Canada because ALL of the world knows that Canada is the place to be!!! Dude, screw all this "diversity and culture" crap in America. I'll take the French and Indian War over the Revolutionary War any day!!! Viva la resistance! Viva!!!!

P.S. - More than 50 percent of Canada's population lives within 50 miles of the US border. Weird?!?!? I wonder why that is...

The Vette is supercar performance at an affordable price.  While it doesn't match the visceral experience of driving one of the "supercars" like a Ferrari or Porsche, it certainly matches or exceeds the performance.  It must be the ultimate in insults to be driving your $250k Scuderia only to spend all day staring at the rear of a $70k Z06.

Also, while enjoy the driving experience in a German car, for the most part they don't match the hard edge performance of an American car.  Looks are subjective, so we won't touch that.  I just find it funny that the owner of any VW Group product would be questioning American engineering.  Christ, even Buicks have superior reliability than any of the Germans with the exception of Porsche.

PS As for holding the fuel nozzle, since I live in Jersey I would never know as we aren't allowed to pump it ourselves.

Well it's worthless to argue with you as you are just another example of ignorant Americans, which makes us look bad sometimes to the rest of the world.

1st, you are dumb enough to even compare Corvette with Ferrari and Porsche. Z06 is crap, just look at the interiors and you will know that the manufacturer didn't even cared to provide the basic quality there...its just tells the mentality of people in detroit...and their attitude in quality... i have driven Ferrari and i know how it feels to be in one of those beauties. you don't know because you have never driven a Ferrari, nor a corvette.

2nd, American engineering superior than Germans? You live in a dream world, and I am not going to wake you up. funny how people will be making fun of you whenever you left the room.

http://www.guba.com/watch/3000009649?pp=5&premium=0&o=4  this video alone should answer everything regarding American muscle, and Audi technology. Enjoy.

3rd, my son who is 23 yrs old believes that Dodge Viper is the best thing that happened to the automobile industry...i don't argue with him anymore.

Oh my god, you're an idiot.

And you are arguing with people l(Some less than half your age) And you're wrong.

You have a son? You're a father, HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA I am literally laughing out loud. I will do my best to have you banned.

Good day man, holy CRAP this is amazing. I dont believe any of this.

I agree with the Canucks.  We have a borderline moron for a president who led us into an unnecessary, unjustified war and is bankrupting this country JUST LIKE HE DID his oil company.  But don't worry about Bush, his wealthy friends will take good care of him as a thanks for reducing the top tax rates and gutting our environmental laws.  He also fought the CAFE for years - his oil buddies make money selling the stuff, not conserving it.  I think about that every time a F250 blows by me at 80-85 mph on I96.  He's probably the biggest whiner about the price of gas at the pump.

At least the Habs are outplaying Toronto.  But my Redwings will kick all their butts.  At least through the second round....
