Default A4 Key Reprogramming

I just purchased a 2000 A4 and the key is broken. The blade is broken from the switchblade and the transmitter does not work. I have two questions:

1) Can I put the blade in a new key holder without any problems? I read that there is a transponder somewhere?

2) The dealership says I cannot get a new remote programmed without a second key. Is there any way to get around this? On my old car they just looked up my code in a database a reprogrammed it.

Thanks,

Jason

The 2000 doesn't have a transponder. You can buy a new blade on eBay. If the knuckle that the blade attaches to is broken then you need to buy a similar key fob from eBay and use the front half of the fob with your old fob. Did the remote ever work?

I followed the portion of the document that says how to reset the remote if the batteries are changed. The remote still does not work. The reprogramming portion looks like it requires a second key to complete the procedure. I only have one key. Is there any other to reprogram the transmitter??

Thanks for the ebay idea- I bought one just now.

For my '03 I just started the car with the fob that needed programming and that was it, nothing else to do.

fob/key/transponder/immobiliser are all separate systems ( some have them all like in the UK ) but in the states im told they dont have the immobilizer? if not that would simplify things,
the alarm is turned on by the fob as it locks the doors and all you need to do is unlock it with the key to turn it off should the fob become damaged,
in the UK and most other countries the key has a chip in it so only that key can start the car so "no immobilizer means no chip" and chaser is correct
