I Just purchased a Used 2004 Audi A6 3.0L with 76,000 Miles on it from dealership, and are noticing problems already.
I don't know if I'm expecting too much or there is really something wrong with this car.
Here is what I notice:
When I'm crusing at a normal speed like 40-50mph and I just am slightly giving the car gas, to stay at that speed, the car kind of stutters alot and shakes. On top of that - I Feel like the car's power has been robbed somehow . maybe these are related?
When I open the hood while engine is running, I hear a constant smack in 2 second intervals (Maybe alternator belt?) It doesn't sound right.
The car is shaking on easy gasing and not really going anywhere until I press the pedal PAST the low position, where you reach resistance, and then push the pedal ALL the way down. Then it speeds up, but it takes a few seconds to read.
Does anybody know what I should try to get fixed on this car, by the above problems?
Thank you in advance - Other then that The audi is a smooth, very very nice ride!
Hey, Rocco, welcome to the madness of Audi. Sorry to hear about the issues with the stutters and shakes, this is not normal. Did you get at least some kind of warranty ? Take it back to the dealer, this could be expensive to fix.
I bought it from a Honda Dealership - Should I take it to a Audi Dealership or back to Honda?
I Pay an extra 150$ a month on the bill for the 2 Year PowerTrain Warrenty and Honda Maintenance Plan which I think only includes services and things of that nature. The powertrain warrenty says it's covers the Transmission as well - but does this only become effective if there is a complete faliure, or should this cover "Not Functioning Correctly" repairs as well?
Thanks for the help - My first time owning a Audi. Thanks Again

Like i always say, there is a reason somebody gets rid of thier car. Since you bought it from the honda dealer you should hold them responsible for the repairs it needs, have honda flip the bill from the audi dealership. Its gonna be a CVT issue. There are several TSB's (Technical service bulletins) to repair certain issues with them. Some are lack of power, others are bucking, RPM's bouncing while cruising and lack of power (which is what yours is) and other things.
It may need a complete trans re-build or a new trans altogether, it depends on what year it is.
Will the Powertrain Warrenty Cover just Not Running correctly Problems with the car - or only if it completly fails? I would like them to fix these problems, but am low on cash after the 5k Down Payment
Get this: I call Audi to schedule a appointment to get it diagnosed. The guy said the problems I've explained are Normal, and no other transmission drives like the CVT Audi Does... I did some research. I found threads with over 80 posts all containing the same problems I've described - and Fixed the've used to better their Audi's...
So Far Everyone says the
7 Plate Clutch Upgrade and A new Multitronic Gearbox
fixes their ride.. Does this sound right? If So, tommarow I'm going in and demanding they upgrade my car - covered under 30 day dealer warrenty. Thank you guys!!!

Yeah they always say that because they don't want anything to do with them, you have to raise hell which is stupid.
Yeah the TSB states depending on the year it will either get a upgraded clutch pack to a 6 plate (not a 7 plate) gear box, or you get a new gear box altogether.
Ok I took the car into the Audi Dealership today for my inspection appointment - I told the technician before he took the keys that the car shudders and I even showed him a paper I had with the TSB #'s on it, and the 6 plate clutch and gearbox upgrades. He said he'd look at it and hook it up to their computers. A Hour later I return and they have a list of things that are important for me to get fixed. These are what they could find
A New Fan Motor Controller Unit - (Why I have been hearing clicking) + New Break Pads for Front Wheels. + Tire Alignment + 4 New Tires
Thats It . No Clutch Plate or Gearbox Upgrades - Nothing. I didn't even get to talk to the Tech afterwards and ask him why he didnt recommened these upgrades - I was stuck with the Receptionist and the $58 Inspection bill. However, the good news is they cleaned and waxed my car - Wow Expensive Car Wash.
I will have to accept the fact my Audi is not smooth on acceleration I guess, and bumps around. Honda said they would pay for the Fan Motor that is $600.00 . Atleast we got one problem out of the way, Oh well. Maybe my next Audi (hopefully a 2010 Audi S5) will be built correctly in the first place. Any suggestions? Thanks!

The Next level has been reached - The Car Shuts Down!
As I was leaving from Honda, after making a service appointment for tommarow to get brakes changed - I came to a stop and my car died - I started it back up, and slowed down at the next stop light, car died. Every time I slow down to a stop, the car dies and I have to restart the car. So the car is at HONDA getting looked at now. Anybody have any idea what this could be? Thanks.... I'm getting more and more dissapointed in my decision of car.

i'm sure the honda tech has absolutely no clue what he's talking about, because they don't know jack about audi's. you definitely need to do something to force someone to get the transmission fixed, because i have a feeling that it's going to get progressively worse, and then you're going to get stuck with the bill and not the people that screwed you over in the first place. another thing you might be able to do is to get on the phone with audiUSA and tell them how completely unsatisfied you are with your audi dealers service, because sometimes if they think you're upset enough, they'll call the dealership personally and make sure that the problem is taken care of.

You gotta call audi of north america and tell them about your situation, almost always they can kick the dealers balls in until they give you what you need. If the dealer can't figure it out they will send the regional TFM to figure it out for you.
A brand new CVT transmission from audi is about $6,000.
Long time lurker here, I finally registered so I could chime in. I have a ’04 A6 3.0, with 36k. I’m the third owner of the car, I bought it from a long time family friend, who got it with ~25k in it. It was a great deal, kinda too good to be true. A few weeks after he bought it, he asked me if I would drive it, because something didn’t felt right with it, so we swapped cars for the weekend. The car had exactly the same problem that you describe. At very low speed, low rpm, it shudders, kinda like a slipping clutch – without the engine revving up. As soon as you step on it, or put in manual and rev it up a bit its fine. Well we talked, and we agreed it is definitely not normal, so he took it to the dealer, who diagnosed it as a bad transmission. They replaced the complete transmission under warranty – I still have the receipt -, although it took three weeks them to get the replacement trani in. In your case, I don’t know if the powertrain is covered for longer than the 4years 40k standard warranty, which –now - my car was still under at the time.
Thanks ! I purchased the 2 year powertrain warrenty so It should be covered. Shuld I bring it into Aamco or HondA? Honda will deny there is any problems, like they would really want to pay for a new tranmission. The only thing I can think of is How can I get them to agree with me, that it is ruined? Papers from Aamco saying it needs a new one? Other then that, i would love to have my car drive well. This car is my best friend already. Thanks for your input

AAMCO won't go near it.
Well you already know the tranny is screwed up, if you wanna fvck it up really bad loosen a couple of bolts on the tranny pan and let the fluid leak out, or just drain a liter or two. This will increase the temperature of the transmission, burn the fluid, and make it run so un-believably bad they will have no choice but to replace it....... I only recommend this if you know for sure that its covered of course.
Well I think I prooved my point today. I was going back to Honda to sign some more paperwork (Endless ****ing flow) and my car kept shutting down everytime I stopped, I had to turn the key back left, and back on again every time I stop. Finally the lazy ass used car manager got in the car and lied about how bad it felt and how much he would take care of it. I said I need a new tranmission, to both the used manager and the service clerk. I said, it's the tranmission for sure, I can feel it every time I drive. So it's in honda again for the 2nd time for the same problem they said they "Fixed" last time. The RPM's rev so low, the car shuts off, sound like a tranny prob? And of course the shuttering b.s. If they dont replace it this time, It's war.

Now i'm getting very very upset and dissapointed with Audi. The Honda dealership has had my car in service for 8 days now, no call. I went in 2 days ago, they said they sent it to the Audi Dealership in Sarasota. Today I called audi, and asked about car. They said the car is fine, and it was stalling because when Honda fixed it last time, they left the throttle to the fuel injection system loose. I Said "the car needs a new tranmission, it drives horrible". i Said "I will call Audi USA, and try to move for them to replace the tranmission" he says "Why". "Because they care about their custoemrs" Then he said something that threw me off. "I Beg to differ, they wont. Audi only is interested in customers who buy new Audi's. You won't get a new tranmission"...
What do I do!?!? The Car Drives now, but ****ty. I think Ammco is the only Non-Bias place I can go to get a real answer on the tranmission. Any Suggestions? Call Audi USA Directly? Return Car? (I love the car, and dont want to return it, just fix it)

Let's face it - Audi won't replace your transmission for free when you are out of warranty, and even though you are paying for an extended warranty it isn't through Audi, so unless the warranty company (which in your case might even be your Honda dealer) is willing to fork up the cash it isn't going to happen.
It sounds like Honda knows it will be on their dime, and since a new tranny costs $6k - they will continue to string you along as long as possible provided your car actually drives. It doesn't need to drive perfect, it just needs to drive - and that is good enough for them to deny a warranty claim.
If you are having this many problems so soon after buying the car, and considering how long the car was in the shop being looked at - I would surely contact the sales manager about returning the car and then look to buy something else. If he refuses then I would probably contact the BBB and your state's consumer protection division and file a formal complaint against them. Nobody should be expected to buy a car and then have constant problems in the first few weeks of ownership....especially someone who opted for the extended warranty.
In my opinion, shy away from anything that has a CVT.....I just hear way too many complaints from people who own them and it isn't just limited to Audis. I have a co-worker who has a Nissan with a CVT and he has had nothing but problems - not to mention it requires way more service and fluid changes that cost him hundreds every 20k miles. No thanks....I'll stick to a "regular" auto.
