the rear main engine seal has been going on my car for a while and my clutch has been getting worse due to what I have been told, my clutch getting soaked in oil. My car is un drivable now and I ahve a new spec clutch stage two a new rear seal assembly from audi and I have a new throw out bearing anf pressure plate. I know that I need to get the flywheel resurfaced. How tricky is this going to be? Do I need any special tools or equipment? I have my car at a friends shop and am doing the work myself. I am waiting for the factory mannual to come. please let me know..
the engine is 2.8l v6 the car is 94 audi 90 s model thanks

Somehow I doubt that it is the rear engine oil seal. Are you loosing a lot of motor oil? The flywheel acts as a barrier and the centripetal forces throw the oil out. The Bell housing is also shaped to channel away any oil that does leak. If you are getting oil it might be from the input shaft oil seal on the transmission. The synthetic gear fluid is thin so getting past a worn seal is not a problem. Also check the gear oil to make sure that it is there in the first place and that the gearbox is not overfilled.

Resurfacing the flywheel is no biggy, but it is not DIY project, take it off and take it to a machine shop. Napa, Pep Boys, etc usually offer such services and it is not all that expensive. If the flywheel is not gouged, glazed or heat cracked, you can skip the machining and use 3M Scotch Bright and die grinder to clean it up. You can also use 50-80 grit sandpaper in circular motion to scuff up the surface. With either method don't go crazy or you are going to destroy the flywheel especially when using power tools.

Since I haven’t changed a clutch on 90 I can’t tell you the steps but getting a factory service manual is good start. You will need a clutch alignment tool and maybe a few others. Quite often I was able to get around Audi special tools by improvising so don’t run out and buy every tool that is mentioned in the manual. Some tools you can rent from places like blauparts.com
