Default some questions about S4 before I buy

imight buy a 2001 S4 in maybe 2 weeks if it pleases the eye. What should i look for before i purchase this car? is there any major or minor problems with it that i should know of? this car is most likely going to be used for autocrossing..and itll also be the 1st car im getting. any replies would be useful. My other choices where a 2003 s2000 or a 95 E36 m3. My dad didnt want me to get a s2k though cause he said its just another toy from honda and its not meant to be a true race car, and that the m3 is just too high maintenance and the previous owner probably drove the crap out of those cars. If im making a bad choice of using the s4 for an autocross car, what other cars would you guys reccomend? any feedback would be nice =)

Wouldn't a '95 M3 cost 1/2 of an S4? 15k as opposed to 30k.

well the e36 m3 is alot cheaper, the s4 is a little bit faster than it, and for autocross the audi quattro will be an advantage. I have driven a 95 m3, they are nice and fun, but the car is old, a 2001 s4 maybe close to 2 times the price of the m3, but i don't think the m3 is worth it, its 8 years old compared to 1 and a half. I would go for the s4, the quattro would be a good advantage in autocross, it would definatly get better times than a 95 m3.

ya, the M3 would be less, but be driven a lot more than an S4. the S4 has quattro, who doesn't like that and it's faster

how much money are you, or your parents i guess, willing to spend? I'm waiting to fall for the 2004 S4 which will have the great 4.2 V-8 with 340 some odd horsepower. It is just as light as the 2.7T because of lighter components and uses a chain drive to make it shorter. Good investment....$45,000.00 USD

also i own an s2000 and its not a toy. It is a car purely built for performance. The 2.0 liter engine (stock) puts out 240 hp. The car is very sturdy and lightweight and easily tuned to 360 horsepower. (if you ask i can tell how) It is a great track car and would also be awesome for autocross.

DO NOTunderestimate the M3. I had an M3 Evolution for 2 years prior to buying the S4, when I got out of the S4 having test driven it, the first thing I said to the salesman was that it was not very quick...he looked at me in awe and I told him what car I had come from. The M3 is very, very fast, possibly too fast. It requires a great deal of respect especially at 120mph in 4th doing about 5/5.5k revs on a wet road (red lines at 7800rpm std)....the cars are different, the S4 performs without all the raw ability of the M3. As much as I love the S4, for sheer driver appeal I'd have me old M3 back any time....and if it were a track day...the only way an S4 would win was if the track was very wet and the M3 had crap tires and a crap driver.

S4 is solid and surefooted and by and large does the job, lets face it, she is still faster than 98% of all other cars and in the wet she'll be 99.5% faster than all other cars, Subaru Impreza excluded...

Different cars....

Meant to add, M3 had only two bills in 2 years and 30k miles, one service of 540 euro (including 140 oil leak fix) and one other of 380 euro, I did oil service in between and also got consistantly over 35mpg and 42 mpg on a run....! Audi or Honda will not do that....
