i think it would probably help a lot if you posted what year a6, although i'm assuming it's a c4 of one form or another. did you wanna just upgrade the headlights to HIDs, or actually take the '99 a6 headlight housing and try to somehow fit it to your car?

well since you already have a c5, you should already have the proper headlight housings with the projector lenses, so all you really need to do is get an HID kit from somewhere. that's really about all you would have to do, just install the balasts and pop and HID Xenons in it, and you should be done, and that should all come in the kit.

Hey thanks alot mustang! I really appreciate your help? Ive got a dark blue audi what temp do you recommend i get like 10,000k for the blue light? I think they would look nice no?!
I suggest you look up xenons on google and learn as much about them as you can such as the different color temps and bulb types, along with the different manufacturers of xenons. Only then will you be able to make the most educated choice for what you want to achieve eith you A6.
If you want OEM Audi looking hids, get 4300k. I had 6000k and they looked bluish purple to others and blue on the road. So 10k would look dark purple to others and dark blue for you. OEM is 4100/4300k, keep in mind that the bulbs will change to their final color after (can't remember) hours.
AZAudiA6Q gave good advise, do a lot or research on HID color temps.
One last thing, projector housings (like ours) bend the light an therefor change its color. So 6k might look white on a Acura, but blue/purple on an C5 A6.

haha, i guess i'm a little late to the party because these guys pretty much already covered everything i was going to say. and i personally wouldn't probably get anything above 6000K for my a6, but that's just personal preference. so i guess good luck in your mission! -mike

yeah see i got a dark blue car so i thought a blue tint would look nice but like you said nothing over 6000K i thought that was kinda extreme in color.
Trust me, in a couple months, your 6k bulbs are going to make you look like a ricer in a civic. Everyday I see fellow Audi owners with their 6k bulbs from a distance and think "look another Integra with aftermarket hids". Of course I then see its and Audi and hang my head in shame.
I wanted my Audi to look oem, not aftermarket. To each his own though.

hmmm okay yeah i dont want that lol? Do you recommend going to HIDs tho if i do use 4300? or should i just stick to Halogen
if you're looking into updating the headlights to what the newer audis have, then halogens aren't going to do it, you have to use HIDs. personally, i think you'd be very dissappointed if you just stuck halogens in there.

Purple or blue lights = aftermarket ricers now? Umm..... no. My mom drives an Acura TL and it's got sweet as HID's. There's a huge difference between purple lights and actual clean looking HID's. I don't think putting 6k blubs in should be a proble, it'll look nice and you'll get the tint you desired for YOUR car. Screw any opinion that contradicts your original goal of matching the color of the lights to the color of your car.
IF there real HIDs shouldnt the color stay the same the whole time not burn off after a while i mean after sever use mayb a little but maybe they put in fake HIDs?!

so by this ur saying anyone with HIDs now is Ricer?

I don't think he really meant it in the traditional "ricer" sense. What he meant was that if you go REALLY blue (more than 6000k), then they don't look like a factory installation. The only ultra blue HIDs are aftermarket, so by putting some REALLY blue ones in, "car enthusiasts" will automatically know that you put in some aftermarket ones. With a milder color like 4300k (which many people suggest) you'll still be able to tell that they are HIDs, it'll just look like your car came equipped with HID lights from the factory. So when you buy mild HIDs like 4300k you're basically fooling other people into thinking that your car came equipped with them when you bought it, so nobody assumes you put them in yourself as an aftermarket "mod." I hope you get what I'm saying.
That's what he meant by implying the "ricer" thing. There are plenty of Hondas and so forth that have insanely blue HIDs (those are "cool" in the street scene) that any proper car guy (or girl!!) can tell right off the bat that they are aftermarket. On the street, the more blue your HIDs, the more "thug" you are. If you embrace that culture, then please, by all means, get the bluest of the blue you can find, but at that point you're kinda just running them for show. Remember: The lower the ('k') value, the brighter the HIDs are. So, 4300k bulbs are significantly brighter than 8000k bulbs.
It all comes down to this "equation": 4300k = decent bling, more light 6000k = substantial bling, less light More than 8000k = All bling
There ARE some cars that have very blue HIDs. Recent Acuras and Cadillacs have deeper blue HIDs than our Audis do, but they still aren't as blue as some of the aftermarket kits you see.
oh ok thanks for that. I understand i just thought a little tint would look good idk?! this sucks lol
Haha. Hey, it's your car man. 6000k do look good, I won't lie. They aren't really over-doing it yet, and I personally like that bluish tint. It looks cool. I just wanted to make sure you knew that you WILL lose some light output the bluer you go. If you read up on some other forums, some people nearly hate it after swapping to higher temp (6000k, 8000k) lights because they got used to brightness of the OEM 4300k and now they can't see stuff they used to. They DO look cooler though. No doubt about it.
And don't worry about the rice comments, either. Only a fool would say that swapping from a 4300k to a 6000k makes your car go from "euro elegance" to "rice trash." Some of these guys need to redefine what they call "rice."
alright thanks yeah i mean 6000K was it. It was 6000K max nothing higher ill let you guys no what i end up going with thank you for all your input guys!!!
