Default S4 engine swap to A4

would it be possible to do an engine swap with a V8 4.2 liter S4 engine into a '98 A4 2.8 liter engine bay?

You'll need to do a lot of modification to the engine bay. But anything is possible with enough cash.

I highly doubt it. The B5 Chassis is much smaller than the B6/7. The 2.7 in the b5 s4 barely has room in there and I'm pretty sure the v8 would be physically bigger.

But like BB mentioned with enough money anything could happen, even if it mean moving the engine to the back of the car etc. How badly do you want it because I can put you in contact with a shop that could make it happen.

I've seen it before, i know you have to use a plasma cutter and cut half of the front bulkhead out so the back of the motor will fit. That and you have to modify a B6 subframe to work on a B5.
