Default Oil filter drama

Hey all. I am midway between an oil change and I'm having a rather tough time getting the oil filter housing off. I was just wondering if anyone has had success with this - and if so, which tool they used. I have tried unsuccessfully to remove it using a wrench on the bottom fitting (as seen on Audi DIY). It feels like I'm going to crack it before it turns. I have a standard filter wrench, but the workspace makes it very difficult to get it in the proper position. TIA.

have had the same thing happen. checked with my dealer and the housing was over torqued, should only be 25 newtons +/- 5 or in english just hand tight. you might have also noticed the unusual drain plug. use a hose on this so as not get oil all over the cross member. filter should cost about $18 w/tax and castrol syntech 5qt package at walmart is just under $20.

good luck and remember go easy on the filter housing.

sorry about this reply noticed you have an a6 not an a3 as this is what i was describing.

Thanks for the quick response RAKA3. I have everything I need, it's simply the issue of getting that housing off. You mentioned that yours was over torqued... does that mean that you weren't able to get it off and had to take it to the dealer?

I have the OEM 36mm end cap wrench and it works good. Bought it off Ebay for around $15.

BTW, mine was seriously over-torqued from the dealer on my last change too. It took a lot of power to remove.

Good luck!

Cheers!

Thanks boywonder - a far better DIY than the one on this forum. The 1 1/2 in. ratchet is about the only tool I didn't have, and nothing else worked - so the filter is still on. I'll have to get it on the next change.

I highly suggest purchasing the 36mm oil filter wrench if you plan on doing the oil change. It is nice having the filter draining tool, but not necessary if you have an ample supply of extra paper towels to clean up.

BTW, here is the link to the Ebay seller:

They are always there for sale and work great.

Cheers!

Thanks for the link Chef. No doubt it would have saved me hours of under-car frustration!
