Default 2.8 performance questions

I have a 1998.5 2.8 Avant and am looking for some basic performance upgrades. It seems the most common upgrades are the chips but most commonly for the 1.8's. I saw one thread about chips for 2.8's and it came down to the tip-chip and the speedtunning chip. Which is really the better one and about how much to each cost. I know for many BMW models one can just plug the chip in; I have heard for Audi’s they have to be soldered to the board. What kind of upgrades would either of the chips give me, about 20 more hp/tq? Also what are some other relatively cheap but quality upgrades?

performance chips for the 2.8 probably aren't worth getting. you'll get about 5-9hp. If your into modding you need to go buy a 1.8T, otherwise save up for a supercharger.

zabranca please use the "Search" Key. It will give you all you need.

Thesekinds of threads are un-needed, all though i probally started one myself when i got my 2.8.

Quickly :

Exhaust= 5-8hp
Intake = Better Throttle Response and Maby a few horses
Chip = anywhere from 5-20hp (so they say)
Pully Set = Said not to do much
PES Supercharger = 295hp at the crank (but $4,700 bran-spankin new)

I may be missing a few things but theres not many upgrades for this motor.

Use the Search For ANYTHING you need, it will keep every one from gettin pissed cause we get this question bout the 2.8 so much.

Good luck man.

the tip chip by the way is for tiptronic transmissions, the Speedtuning chip is supposed to be pretty good.

The SpeedTuning chip (or GIAC or APR, etc) and tip chip are not mutually exclusive. They do different things. I think the tip chip is around $500. SpeedTuning is probably closer to $200, but you'd have to email them to be sure. If you're going to get one or the other or one and then save up for the other, get the SpeedTuning chip. My car really does feel significantly peppier and I would bet the gains are close to what SpeedTuning claims (what, ~20 hp?). The tip chip won't net you horsepower. And yeah, on your car, the chip would have to be soldered in. Which, in the case of SpeedTuning, means shipping your ECU out and not being able to drive it for a few days (unless you live within driving distance of their shop).
