So I called my insurance company to compare the VW GTI, Audi A3, and BMW 335i. I was quoted $580/yr for the GTI, $540/yr for the A3, and $740/yr for the 335i. While the BMW did not surprise me, why do you guys think the GTI is more expensive than the A3? How do these rates compare to your insurance? I am married, 34yrs old with a pretty decent driving record.

The A3 is considered a station wagon, and I believe the GTI is a "hot" hatchback. Going more by the demographic of the driver, opposed to the car I assume.
VW GTI likely has a higher theft rate, higher crash rate, and they're frequently owned by a demographic who typically has vehicle "problems" along the way...younger, unmarried, males.
Hey Graviton. For $#!!'s and giggles- get a quote for the Subaru WRX wagon. You will be completely shocked about the premium. The difference completely makes up for the price difference between the A3 and the WRX. Like you, I also check the insurance rates on the cars I had been comparing when I got the A3.
As Chef and Blue Jays pointed out - check out the demographics of the GTI drivers. Much different than the married, stable, responsible, child rearing drivers of A3's. Who of course stay to proper side of the law and do not speed or drive 'hard'. Right folks.

At 25 the words married and child rearing scare the hell out of me but I would agree with stable and responsible.
I know I would never ever go more than 5 MPH over the posted limit or go into a corner faster than suggested. [:-]

The WRX (non STI version) is expensive to insure? Why is that? Is it also a boy racer car?
Yes the WRX was shockingly expensive. The insurance companies do not seem to differentiate between the STI and not STI versions. My take on it is all on perception - the general demographics of the WRX drivers are the younger "boy racers". For Audi station wagons, well - I'm not gonna push for changes on that perception. I really loving what I'm paying for premiums, literally - it's half of what I paid for insuring a 540i.
