I have a check engine light on and error codes 1340 and 1347 have come up. Some thing to do with a sensor for the camshafts (A6 from 2002, V6 engine)or for the rod. Switched the one for the camshafts that was most likely but the lamp still goes on. Anyone have some suggestions for a solution??

If it's a cam sensor issue, at least the sensors are easy to change. When one of mine went bad, I found that the 1.8T uses the same part and it's a direct swap. Even so, you may have fixed your problem and not know it - the code won't clear itself and the CEL won't extinguish on its own. You need to have the codes cleared from the ECU and then restart the car to see if they come back. From there, you'll have a better path of what you need to do.

We checked, replaced and switched positions for the cam-sensors. Did not help. Decided to change the camcord. Doing that we experienced that the left cam was slightly out of phase, i.e. it was not synchronized with the right one. Correcting this and with a new camcord mounted the error was cleared. But can anyone explain to me how one of the cams can lose its position like that??

Given that the cam sensors were tripping the CEL, it was slippage on an intake cam I'd assume, and that's where you did the rephasing? If so, that cam (as you've found out) is driven off the exhaust cam sprocket by a chain drive setup. I'd think only two possibilities would be in play:

1 - the chain drive loosened some (maybe bad chain tensioner), and that allowed the intake cam to rotate out of phase
2 - the timing belt skipped a tooth and threw things off on the exhaust cams, which led to a corresponding shift on the intake cams

I"m honestly not sure what else could cause it, other than one of those two possibilities.
