Is there any pooling of liquid under your can when it has been parked for a while? If so what is the color and consistancy? Can you descibe the smell of the smoke?

Sounds like the dreaded trans problem..... You probably have one of the early DPZ transmissions. They were engineered by Porsche and designed as a "sealed lifetime transmission" so there is no way to check your fluid. They leak at the rear seal and will drip on the left cat and cause the smell you are talking about. I would park it ASAP and get it on stands. Check out www.audipages.com on their transmission repair documents. If you end up replacing the trans look at options, don't just run to the dealer.

Hope this helps.
