I am a first time Audi owner but a long time car nut. I just bought a 2001 A4 1.8t Quattro. After having the car for a few days my check engine light came on. I figured it was the vacuum hose problem that most A4's have and after having the code checked at Auto Zone thats what it was. My car only came with one key, so of course I had to go an hour away to the nearest Audi dealer (Dean) to get more. The people on the pone were very helpful with getting my keys and even hough they had to order them they ot there in a couple of days. I set up my service appointment to get the keys programed and told them about my CEL. They said "no problem we'll get it taken care of". When we (my wife and I) got there the service person Dennis was very helpful and took care of us right away. I told him what we were there for, and what the code on the check engine light was. He said "no problem, we'll let you know something as soon as we can." We wandered though the dealership, which is veeery nice by the way. We looked at a bently, drooled over an A8, and really stared for quite a while at an orange race prepped porsche. After a little over an hour, Dennis came to s and said our keys were all set, but the CEL was a different story. He said the Vac hose/ secondary air pump fault was an intermittent code and had cleared itself. I was now showing a hard code that meant 2 of my 4 ignition coils were bad. He said that they would have to replace all 4 just to be safe. This was going to cost and extra 310 bucks on top of the 200 for keys. With out being rude I asked if the car still ran and drove(because I have to believing that if half of my coils weren't working I wouldn't have made the hour long drive at interstate speeds very well.) He said yes the car works fine. I thanked him for the offer but declined to have that repair done. Then he told me I would still have to pay the diagnostic fee of 97 dollars. 97 bucks to plug in a reader and just tell me the "problem". I don't think so. Since no one told me about the fee during any of my calls to set up the appointment or dropping off the car they worked it into the cost of the labor for programming the keys. I ended up paying 247 for 2 class B keys, programming and diagnostic/clearing the CEL. Overall it was not a bad experience, just not quite what I expected from an Audi/Porsche facility. I will say that I was happy to get out in just over an hour, instead of the 2 hours I would have spent at my previous Toyota dealership getting an oil change.
