I have some scratches on my A6 that are not coming out with the scratch remover from Auto store. Does anyone has used one in the past or can recommend one that is really good. I dont care if its expensive as long as it does the job. Thanks
Are you talking about scratches or swirl marks? My 4.2 is dark blue and I find that the Zaino products, which can only be purchased on the internet, do a great job with eliminating swirl marks. I have not sufferd my first scratch yet, so I can't help you with that.
By swirl marks I am referring to the circular marks in the clear coat that are left behind by commercial car washes or a bad detail job. Swirls are on the surface, not into the paint. When I think of scratches, it is something that penetrates the paint, not just the clear coat. You can also try the detailing forum to see if they have any suggestions.

What year and color is your car? Only reason I ask is because I though I had scratches front to back when I had first bought my car (used), my car is a black 95 a6, and I could have sworn that they were scratched and of course I went through every scratch remover on the damn shelf and buffed my car with coats of the remover and the wax. Took my car to an auto body shop and after he looked at it inch by inch the paint turned out to be cracked down to the metal and would require a sand blast to the metal and a repaint to repair it. I know it sucks but just something to consider.
He just purchased a blue 2006 that another forum member advises spent part of its life in a NYC impound yard.
"part of its life" such a vague and scary statement....
He may have made a decent deal on the car, but the car does have a "vague and scary" history. Hopefully with the Certified warranty the car will not become a repair expense, but he is currently dealing with the annoyances of a car that may have had a tough life. According to the report ran by our fellow forum member, the car spent approximately the last six months of its 24 month life in the NYC impound yard and was then auctioned for unpaid parking tickets. The Audi dealer that purchased the car at auction needed a month or two with the car to make certain repairs in order to get Audi to provide certified status and a warranty. If the car could talk I am sure it would have some very interesting stories to tell. But at this point we are all just trying to add our two cents regarding cleaning up the interior and exterior scratches.

NYC impound makes sense but interior is flawless with some minor scratches on outside. How do we know it spent 6 months at an impound? Where does it show that kind of information? Thanks for the detail
when you use the scratch removers from auto stores, you have to do some light buffing. it's usually best to take it to a professional if you don't know how to use a buffer because you can serious F up your stuff.

In the “Hard to Resist” thread you started, MPDC_1 posted the following two items regarding the VIN posted by the dealer for your car.
First Post
Hey audia6s,
I can help you get some information on whether this car has ever had an insurance claim placed on it. I have access to a database that wilol tell you if there has ever been an insurance claim filed on the vehicle for any reason (i.e. collision, theft, act of god, etc.) Just post the VIN or PM it to me and I can run the check right away.
Just to give you a heads up about how much better this website is than Carfax, I've run dozens of reports for myself and friends. Carfax didn't report any damage history on over 90% of them, but NICB picked up on all but one.
Second Post
You are gonna love this. The good news is that the vehicle has no damage history. It was shipped from Audi on 9/19/05 to dealer # 408A18 (don't have any way of decoding which dealer it is). But the vehicle was sold to an owner in New York.
Now for the interesting part... The vehicle was impounded/seized by NYC Sheriff Marshals Program for nonpayment of parking tickets in 6/27/07!! So it may be that they seized the vehicle and retitled it to sell it at auction. At any rate, there doesn't appear to be any damage history to the vehicle.
The six months in my post was based on the car entering the impound yard in June of 2007, as set forth above, and hitting the dealer lot for repairs in January 2008, as set forth in your post. So I guess technically I should have said seven months instead of six months. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I did not mean to mischaracterize the interior of your car, which you say is “flawless”, by referring to it as having scratches. I was just repeating what you have said in another post that you started. Namely in a thread you titled as “Scratch on MMI display” you wrote:
Does anyone know if somehow we can either replace (could be really expensive) or remove scratches from MMI display. I have 2006 A6 that has scratches that can be seen in dar background. Thanks a lot
Within that thread you posted a link to a product that you were considering in order to take out the interior scratches. The link summarized the scratch removal product as follows:
The Plastic Pro - Professional Plastic Restoration System from Lake Country smoothes and restores complete optical clarity to all plastic surfaces. This step-by-step scratch and defect removal system removes swirls, fine scratches, stains and oxidation, and polishes the plastic to restore and maintain optical clarity.
Depending upon the severity of the defect in the surface of the plastic that you are working on, you may elect to work with light abrasive wet sand papers to remove deep imperfections prior to polishing with the Professional Plastic Restoration System. Over-aggressive use of wet sand papers will quickly remove material and possibly create a weakness or distortion in the surface
Based on your prior posts, and the description of the material that you told us you were considering, I concluded that the interior had some scratches. If the interior is “flawless” that is great, I was just summarizing what you wrote.

I cannot believe I missed that...I remember sending you the VIN I think. Sorry and Thanks for the great info. Good news is that it was not damaged but at the same time, impound made some marks that can be fixed without investing lot of money. I am taking the car in for some minor checkups on software upgrade etc. With Interior, I mean the leather looks very nice except the scratch on MMI. I think it'll take me few weeks to get everything back in good shape but Certification and manufacturers warranty does help me out here. Appreciate your quick feedback and response.
i bought it at the philly auto show after i saw the creator of it demo it there ... i bought the whole kits for 45 bucks there
in his demo he spraypainted the hood of his car and used the cleaner and it came right off ... i was so confident that i actually spray painted a tiny section of my own car and sure enough the cleaner took it off ... great for wheels great for paint ... the wax is awesome and lasts a pretty long time ... i wax my car with it every 3 months and take it through the car wash about 3 to 4 times a month and the wax remains and makes it look like i just waxed it ... good stuff try it out
i dont think this will help with cracked paint though if that is your case

Look at it this way, if the scratches are on the surface of the clearcoat, you can use a mild cut compound (3M) that will remove the surface scratch. A clay bar may also work depending on the severity of the scratch. You then need to use a swirl mark remover (3M has 2 different types for light and dark colored cars), then use a pure caranuba wax (3M) to provide a protective finish. A professional polisher is recommended. If the scratches are in the clearcoat, the only way to remove them would be to wet sand them out and you need to know what you are doing because clear coats are thinner than a sheet of loose leaf paper and it is easy to ruin the surface.
Hope this helps!

Thanks. I talked to a detailer and his friend owns a body shop so he'll do a went sand and buffing for $100. Since it's minor surface scratches, it should be done in 2 hours and the price is not bad.

The other day I asked my wife if she had the van washed and she reminded me that it rained. I guess it got a nature's wash!
My daughter informed me that my grandkids loved going thru a car wash. It took me a few seconds to get over the horror of picturing the kids in a car wash until I realized they were in a car.
I cleaned out my Audi the other day - I found a plastic bag full of Duncan Donut coffee cups and napkins, enough change to buy two gallons of gas, the chap stick I lost last fall, and the window scraper I wanted to use a few months ago.
By the way -- My son did Auto detailing a few years back and he used comercial products - not over the counter crap- for most of his work. The really expensive cars got Zymol wax that I use on my Audi, VW, van, and roller skate. The interiors get leather cleaner/oils, and aircraft grade cloth and carpet cleaner. Aircraft grade is important because they have to be careful about residue that oxidizes the aluminum.
PS I also use the Zymol on my grandkids electric Barbie jeep. -- Nothing but the best for them!!!

Hey Kevin, I've had my 2000 Audi a6 2.7 for 2 plus years. It runs well and hasn't given me many problems. Thing is that I over looked a few cosmetic things on the car when I purchased it, namely the front bumper and front passenger fender (my bad.), it now clear that some minor body work was performed. My question, if I send you my VIN could or would you do a vechicle history check for?
