View Full Version : Scratch on MMI display...?? audia6s 03-01-2008, 02:19 PM Does anyone know if somehow we can either replace (could be really expensive) or remove scratches from MMI display. I have 2006 A6 that has scratches that can be seen in dar background. Thanks a lot Kevin 03-01-2008, 02:28 PM Try using Plexus. It works well on my screen. audia6s 03-01-2008, 02:37 PM Does it remove scratches from plastic? I just read about it...it doesnt say anything about scratch removal. Thanks Kevin 03-01-2008, 04:04 PM I don't know how deep your scratches are. I have used Plexuson my MMI screen, which is soft plastic, and the wood veneer around the car, with very good results to the eye. However, my scratches are surface level type scratches, not anything that is very deep. You can also try the detailing forum to see if they have any ideas. audia6s 03-01-2008, 07:04 PM Can someone provide feedback or input on this product from autogeek? Thanks http://www.autogeek.net/lc-plastic-pro-kit.html Kevin 03-01-2008, 08:16 PM That is some heavy duty products. Those must be some deep scratches.I would ask about it on the detailing forum. audia6s 03-04-2008, 01:22 PM I tried detailing forum but doesnt look like people respond or post much in there. I found this product for LCD display scratch remover and I am wondering if anyone has used it before and what do they think about this product? Thanks http://www.wirelessground.com/saguaki.html NH_USA 03-04-2008, 03:48 PM If they are deep Iwould try to fill the scratches with a good automotive polish/wax. Products that remove hazeis OK but attempting to polish deep scratchesout with an abrasivepolishing compound removes layers of plastic and could make it worse. My son used something for aircraft windows that removed haze and filled deep scratches. Maybe Shorty's Aircraft supply has something! NH_USA 03-04-2008, 03:57 PM I can't find Shorties try sky geek http://www.skygeek.com/wipoto.html audia6s 03-04-2008, 05:49 PM Here is the thing...they are not deep...I cant even feel them on the screen...I can see them like swirls...like some kid wrote on it or something. I'll see if I can take some pictures. Kevin 03-04-2008, 06:34 PM I am going to try for the third time. I have a C6, unlike most particpants on this forum. I have lived with myMMI screen for three years. I understand your problem with the screen. I have concluded that the marks are caused by the spray used at many hand car washes. To complicate matters the MMI screen is a soft material. It is not going to respond well to items designed for hard plastic. I have tried many things over the last three years. I am once again suggesting that you try using Plexus. If the "scratch, mark or swirl" has penetrated the soft MMI cover and damaged the underlying MMI screen then I don't know what could help. NH_USA 03-05-2008, 12:28 PM Damn -- Kevin is a persistent guy! [sm=headbang.gif] Maybe we should listen to him! [sm=wakeup.gif] audia6s 03-05-2008, 12:43 PM Well...I ordered it so I'll see what happens with Plexus. Thanks guys Kevin 03-05-2008, 07:52 PM ORIGINAL: NH_USA Damn -- Kevin is a persistent guy! [sm=headbang.gif] Maybe we should listen to him! [sm=wakeup.gif] Somehow my wife keeps saying no.[sm=headbang.gif] NH_USA 03-06-2008, 09:09 AM Why are wives always right???? [sm=oopssign.gif] audia6s 03-08-2008, 08:55 AM Plexus DID NOT work. I think I am going to ask the dealer to replace this since I just bought it. It might take me some convincing and phone calls. Kevin 03-08-2008, 11:44 AM The screen is a soft screen, I wonder if the damage is below the screen? The actual MMI unit is going to be big bucks. It is a shame you did not see it when you test drove the car. Good luck with the dealer. audia6s 03-08-2008, 11:59 AM I have a good business case...I was trying to look at it during day light but because they kept delaying (maybe bcuz of this) it was almost dawn and the scractch doesnt show up during evening and night time. I already asked audi dealer for the cost and it's around $1500 w/install...no way I am paying that Kevin 03-09-2008, 07:40 AM The MMI, at least while in navigation mode, has a day mode and a night mode. If you turn on the navigation map at night, and turn off the headlight and running lights, thereby forcing the MMI systeminto day mode, dothe "scratches" go away? If so,the problem may bewith the MMI and not the screen. Perhaps some of the black pixels, whichare used to a greater extentin night mode, aredamaged. I wonder if the car's 7 month hibernation may have resulted in some of the pixels "freezing". While it is a longshot, it may also be either the MMI software of the Nav software. There were many "bugs" in the early software of both that caused owners to experience many different problems. I know we discussed this on your thread regarding the bluetooth phone. To check the MMI version in your car, start the car and press the "car" MMI button. The MMI screen will then have the word version in the bottom right hand corner. Press the bottom right MMI button and a screen will pop up with the first line starting with SW for software. In mine it reads: something likeSW C6 HU 33.60. The spaces with the 33.60 in my example are for the software version. I would be interested in what version is installed in your car. In addition to the MMI software, some of the earlier MMI bugs were fixed by upgrading the Navigation software. If youopen your trunk and remove the cover on the left side you will see a DVD player. Pop the eject button and the NavigationDVD will pop out. What version is written on the DVD?I would also be curious to see what Navigation version you are running. Can you post pictures of the problem? audia6s 03-09-2008, 09:50 AM Software version is upto date...verified by dealer when I took in the car 2 days ago. Swirl scratches that is internal bcuz you dont feel them from outside doesnt show up with dark and bright background. It only shows up when sun is bright and reflects on the screen. I'll post some pictures later today. Thanks Kevin audia6s 03-09-2008, 10:50 AM Here is the picture of MMI. Obviously, scratch doesnt show up at night time or when NAV is on during the day. Jeffla 03-09-2008, 12:19 PM Maybe you could put a screen protector over it. Some screen protectors for your pocket pc/smartphone will hide scratches and small marks. Who knows if they make any for your device but something to consider. Anti-reflective protectors tend to hide the scratches, ones called crystal clear or whatever don't. Jeff Kevin 03-09-2008, 01:58 PM ORIGINAL: audia6s Here is the picture of MMI. Obviously, scratch doesnt show up at night time or when NAV is on during the day. Holy smoke, that is a completley different situation than the one I was envisioning. That would certainly drive me crazy. It looks like someone played hopscoth or tic tac toe on the unit. It is certainly not a "car wash" or software issue. I am no expert, but I would be afraid that you would have to install a whole new MMI monitor. I am so particluar about my carthat I would pay the dealer the $1,500 toreplace the unit just so I would not have to look at that everytimeI got into the car. In addition, do not beat yourself for missing the scratches on thetest drive, even at $1,500to replace the monitor you still only paid $30,200 for a car that Edmunds valued at $34,800. Look at it this way, you still have $4,000 left in the "good deal account" to spend on mods. Take a look at Mad Audi's website and I am sure you will find a way to spend the remaining $4,000. audia6s 03-09-2008, 03:41 PM I am totally with you Kevin (dont feel like driving it bcuz of that...usually take the car out at night when I cant see it :D)but that is my backup plan. I am talking to Audi customer care and also, sales guy said that he'll try talk to CPO manager and see if he can get it replaced. Dont you they should have looked at during certification. I bought mercedes, bmw and lexus certified cars in the past and if I have any issues like this the day after or one week then they take care of it. I'll fight for it :) audia6s 03-13-2008, 06:45 PM Couple hundred and they are replacing the MMI display [sm=happybounce.gif] Saved $$$$ Operations manager was very helpful and worked out the deal with me after some discussion and negotiation. |
