Default New Audi owner

Hello all, I just bought a 1997 Audi A4 2.8 Quattro. White, automatic with black leather interior. Love it so far, out of curiousity since I'm new to Audi's when it starts up after being cold, it makes a humming sound. The dealer said something about a cold air intake that once it warms up it will go away, which it did. Also while I was test driving it he pointed out that it makes a slight whine while turning. He said this is due to the AWD and that the wheels are aligning or something along those lines. Just wanted to see if this is something serious or if he was just bsing me. Thanks for any help you can provide!

Wow, that dealer knows nothing.

The humming on start up I don't know but I know it's not the cold air intake.

and the whining is probably due to low power steering fluid

whining thoughts exactly. grab some power steering fluid and fill that baby up and see if the whining goes away. the humming might be a cat going bad? take it to meineke and get your cats checked for free.

I think if his cats were going bad it wouldn't be humming, my cats are shot, I mean shot( like the baffling isn't in there anymore) and they sound like a diesel apparently and also give me a little rumble when I get off the accelerator I feel like the humming might be something else but I don't know enough to make an educated guess.

If anything, take the car to Autozone and get it scanned for free and see if you pull an codes?

Here are pics. I'll try that when I get it. Just wanted to make sure it wasn't possibly very serious.

i like the autozone suggestion. pull all error codes and post them up so we can determine. you don't want to break yourself on buying a new car only to find out you have to replace a bunch of expensive parts! cats alone for that car are about 400 each not including labor; which all the places you go to will f'ck you on because its a german car. tell the dealership you want to take it to get it checked out and if it has some things wrong with it, figure out the total estimated repair costs and tell them you want that taken off the price.

Interesting..this one comes with, so I won't be paying more for it. I've had decent experiences with warranty companies in the past though. Even though I've only had one.

thats cool man, make sure you check your car asap and get the ball rolling. sometimes if you find a problem right before your warranty goes up, they'll bs you until your warranty is out and say too late.
